Patlabor: The New Files Ep. 4: GAME OVER

0
Summary

Bud charges the Griffon‘s engines for a high speed boost and knocks Unit 1 onto its carrier. He then moves in to decapitate the Griffon, but Hiromi suddenly drives forward and gets away. Shinshi charges forward with Unit 2‘s carrier, but Bud smashes into it with his hand and causes the trailer to break away. With Unit 1’s batteries dead, Hiromi continues to drive away with the Griffon in pursuit. Momoko tells her cameraman to ignore the Griffon fight because their scoop is at the hotel. Ota pulls Shinshi out of the wrecked carrier, and Asuma gives chase in his command car. Hiromi tells Noa to get out because it’s too dangerous to be in Alphonse’s cockpit if it can’t move. Bud closes in on the carrier, but Shige blocks the path with Unit 3‘s carrier as Kanuka deploys. Sakaki tells his mechanics to get the spare batteries ready for Unit 1. Kumagami looks through the hotel’s register and finds Richard Won listed in room 707. Utsumi calls Bud and tells him to wrap things up soon. Ota struggles to pick up the Ingram revolver, and Shinshi tells him there’s no way they can use it. Bud then picks up the revolver and tries to shoot it, but Kanuka grabs him by the hand. Kumagami has a hotel employee take her up to room 707 and tells him the people tied to the Griffon are in there. Goto tells Kanuka that her motors are redlining, but she says she only has to hold out until Unit 1’s batteries are changed. With the spare batteries in, Unit 1 reactivates. Kumagami reaches for a gun when the door opens and realizes she isn’t armed. The Griffon rips off Unit 3’s left arm, and Kumagami is surprised to find another man answering the door. She apologizes to a naked woman in the room, who is watching news that it’s now midnight. Fireworks start to go off in the sky, and Noa says she’s going to end things once and for all. Bud uses his loudspeaker and reveals his identity, which shocks Noa.

Kanuka reaches for the gun and tries to shoot, but Noa stops her just as the Griffon charges into both of them. Kurosaki tells Utsumi that they shouldn’t have relied on Bud, and Utsumi says Kurosaki’s detonator won’t work because he knew about it and had it disabled. Akashi, the man in room 707, calls Kurosaki to let him know that Kumagami is in the hotel. Utsumi is surprised to hear that Kumagami is in the hotel and tells Bud they can’t stay. Bud says he’s tired of people interfering and rips off his helmet so that he can ignore Utsumi. Asuma explains to Kanuka that Bud is a kid, but Kanuka says they’re not playing a game and have to stop the Griffon. Utsumi and Kurosaki disguise themselves as hotel employees, and Kumagami confronts Utsumi in the laundry room. Bud tells Kanuka she doesn’t have the guts to shoot at him, so she opens fire. Noa charges toward Bud, and he tosses her into the hotel’s pond. Utsumi apologizes to Kumagami and says he’s done lots of horrible things to her, but she tells him it’s too late for apologies. He then hands over a gun and says he’s going to turn himself in. Utsumi tells Kumagami that back in Hong Kong in 1997 he did intends to cut his ties with Schaft, but he didn’t want to put her in danger. Kumagami asks Utsumi if he knew she was a cop when they met, and he says he didn’t. Kumagami starts to handcuff Utsumi, but he suddenly reaches out and hugs her. He then picks her up and tosses her in a laundry bin before escaping in a service elevator. Noa punches the Griffon and tells Bud that they aren’t playing a game. Bud says he won’t lose to Noa, and Goto tells Kanuka to do something. Unit 1’s cockpit hatch falls off, and Noa barely dodges an attack to the cockpit. Noa then grabs the Griffon and flips it over herself, sending both labors crashing into the ground. She gets out of her cockpit with a shotgun and forces Bud out of his cockpit. Kurosaki and Utsumi lament the situation as they drive away, and Kurosaki wonders if it’s a good idea to leave the Griffon behind. Kurosaki pulls out the detonator and says he was lying. The Griffon’s cockpit is ejected, and Asuma finds the bomb with a one-minute cockpit. Kanuka starts dragging the Griffon into the bay and tosses it in just before it explodes. Noa gives Bud a hug when he starts crying. One week later, everyone at the station house discusses the fall out, including Bud’s deportation to India. Kumagami gives the broken watch to Shige and tells him it’s a fake. Noa calls them inside because the bean soup is ready.

Commentary

The clock marks the start of the year 2000 as the fight with the Griffon finally reaches a conclusion. Things aren’t looking good for Noa, but luckily Kanuka arrives in Unit 3 to provide backup. Bud is so desperate to have Noa know that he’s her enemy that he breaks radio silence, which catches her by surprise. It’s been a long time coming, but this episode finally gives us a confrontation between Kumagami and Utsumi. Utsumi’s dialogue expands a bit on their romantic relationship in Hong Kong, but even until the end he happily manipulates her to escape. Although he and Kurosaki escape, this is the last we’ll ever see of them in Patlabor. As the characters note, Noa gets pretty scary when she gets angry in a fight. As before, the fight with the Griffon degenerates into a back and forth fist fight, but Noa finally brings it to a close. Overall, this was a fitting conclusion to the long running arc.
