With the loss of several fleets in the One Week War in January UC 0079, the Earth Federation Forces found themselves at somewhat of a loss when the time came to mount a counterattack in space. The Public class assault ship was an attempt to create a simple gunboat that could supplement the main fleet of Salamis and Magellan class ships in an assault. A simple design, the only weapons of the Public class were two large capital ship-grade missiles. These missiles were intended to be utilized in hit-and-run operations against large immobile targets during a space battle. However, while fast, the Publics possessed poor maneuverability and poorer armor, and many of these ships were destroyed in the battles for Solomon and A Baoa Qu in late UC 0079.
