The QCX-76A Jormungand was a super-large fusion plasma gun developed by the 603rd Technical Evaluation Unit on the Jotunheim. At 231 meters, the Jormungand was nearly the same length as a Musai class ship. The Jormungand’s estimated maximum firing range was 2,000 kilometers, but its effective firing range was only 300 kilometers. The Jormungand was incapable of independent movement and was assembled on site before use. It is operated by a gunner who relied on observational data from nearby ships. The Jormungand made its combat debut at the Battle of Loum in January UC 0079, but it was completely ignored by the Zeon hierarchy, which had instead chosen to rely on mobile suits for the battle. Gunner Aleksandro Hemme tried to fire the Jormungand with only visual data, and in the three shots fired managed to destroy a Magellan class ship before being killed by return fire. After the battle, weapons like the Jormungand were swept away as the age of mobile suit warfare began.
