RahXephon Movement 16: Another Person’s Island/The Moon Princess

Summary

Itsuki, Makoto and Helena discuss Quon’s transfer and Itsuki asks about Ayato. Makoto says if he can’t be raised as a mate, then they should send him to a concentration camp. Megumi tries to get Ayato out of bed, telling him it’s the day of her big test. Ayato asks if she knew, but she’s clueless. Ayato goes back to bed and Megumi storms out. Megumi runs through a simulation of the RahXephon’s desertion and afterwards says it wasn’t fair. Kim agrees it was a nasty simulation but adds that she did fine. Kim says they’ll have her promotion party, but Megumi says she won’t be there because there’s something she has her heart set on. Jin leaves Megumi’s promotion up to Souichi and Ayato enters. He demands to know when they discovered he was a Mulian but Jin says it’s need to know information. Shirow speaks up and identifies Ayato as the RahXephon’s Instrumentalist. He says he hasn’t produced a good timber yet and that a good tonal pattern can calm the soul. Jin says he doesn’t hate it, but Ayato says he does. Shirow asks what Ayato does like, and he says he likes to paint. Shirow says the feelings he puts into a brush can be expressed in sound and that he had a son that also liked to draw. Ayato says Shirow’s son has nothing to do with it and Quon enters to say goodbye. Haruka asks Shougo about his daughter, and he brings up the tale of the Bamboo cutter. He says his daughter’s real family eventually came for her. He suggests they tell Ayato the truth, but Haruka is afraid of what might happen. Quon asks Ayato where he’s going, and he says home. She asks where that is and says she’ll come for him the next day. Megumi buys a new set of underwear and takes the train home. She hears Kim’s voice and turns around and sees her with Souichi. They talk about what to have for dinner and the train stops. Megumi leaves her purchase on her seat. Sayoko and Makoto drink at a bar and she accuses him of using her. She says they used each other, but she ended up loosing. She leaves a bag and says she doesn’t need it because there is no one to show it to. She leaves and Makoto pulls a torn dress from the bag. Ayato sulks in his room and Megumi joins him. She says she was better off not knowing and asks if he knew. He thinks so but that he was afraid to know because he likes it there. Megumi says he’s a sweet guy and that they’re a lot alike. Megumi joins Haruka and says adults are lucky because they can drink beer to forget their worries. Haruka says that’s the lie adults tell and Megumi says they’re all liars. Haruka says that lies are harder on the person who tells them then the one who was lied to. Itsuki watches over Quon and says he knows where she really wants to go.

Megumi is promoted to a permanent member but she isn’t happy about it. Kim talks to her later and asks if she knew about her and Souichi. Kim cries and apologizes, but Megumi says it’s ok. She says she has to go tell some one because she’s sure he’ll congratulate her. Ayato lies in the grass and Haruka picks him up. Ayato goes on about the ocean, and Haruka guesses he doesn’t trust her. He asks if she knew and she says it doesn’t matter if he’s a human or a Mulian. He reminds her that she said she’d show him the truth, but she hid it from him instead. He says he should have stayed in Tokyo. He calls her a liar and leaves. Quon shows up at Shougo’s house, but he says Ayato isn’t home. Quon looks at the shogi board and Shougo says he’ll teacher her how to play. Haruka visits Itsuki, who’s packing up. Haruka says Ayato might be leaving too and that she knows Quon isn’t Itsuki’s sister. Itsuki says she’s still family and Haruka says she didn’t know he was such a strong person. She says she wants to be stronger too and Itsuki wonders who’s sake it’s for. Ayato returns to find Quon beating Shougo at shogi. Shougo says he’s going to visit an old friend and tells Ayato to lock up if he plans to leave. Ayato asks if Quon was laughing at him too, but she says she’s also a Mulian. Ayato wonders why everyone treated her normally and she says she wants him to take her to Tokyo. He says it’s impossible because of the barrier but Quon says if he got out he can go back in. Ayato laughs and realizes the real barrier was inside him. Quon says they might not be any answers there, but Ayato is ok with it. Megumi gives up on finding Ayato and calls his cell phone, but he left it at the house. Ayato and Quon prepare to leave, but Haruka begs Itsuki to stop them. Ayato says he has to go and take everything at face value so he can make his decision to live as a human or a Mulian. Haruka slaps him and says he will return because he is himself. Haruka says she’ll believe in him even if he betrays them. Ayato says he’ll take care of Quon and asks Itsuki to take care of Haruka. Ayato and Haruka link hands and he says he has to go. Itsuki says he altered the video feed and tells Haruka she was never there. Megumi leaves a message on Ayato’s phone and the RahXephon flies away. Ayato and Quon are confirmed to be in it and Makoto asks Jin what he plans to do. Shougo asks Shirow if it was ok not to tell him, and Shirow says he has no right to.

Commentary

As one could expect, Ayato decides to leave. He wants to weigh his options so he can decide how he wants to live. Why Quon is going is anyone’s guess. Megumi finds out about Kim and Souichi, and you can’t help but wonder what she was planning on doing with that underwear. She gets over it rather quickly though and realizes her feelings for Ayato. Too bad he left when she did. It was quite heavily hinted in this episode that Shirow is Ayato’s father, with Shirow talking about his son and his conversation with Shougo. Not to mention they look similar, especially in hair color. Now that Ayato’s heading out to Tokyo Jupiter, let’s hope it’s more coherent than the last time he thought he went there.
