RahXephon Movement 3: City of Two/Welcome to Our Town

Summary

Maya says Ayato has awakened and he has no idea what she’s talking about. Allegretto bursts out of the wall behind Maya, but she floats up onto its head. She sees Reika on the RahXephon’s shoulder and wonders how she’s there. Haruka tells Ayato not to go with Maya and Fortissimo comes out of another wall, sending rocks at Haruka. The RahXephon blocks the rocks and takes Haruka into its hand. It flies out of the temple and Fortissimo follows it. Maya identifies Reika as Ixtli and Reika tells RahXephon to sing its forbidden song. Ayato looks over at her and Fortissimo fires a beam at him. He manages to block but Reika disappears. Ayato sees her scarf float away and goes into a rage. Rahxephon charges forward and takes Fortissimo by the neck and crushes it. RahXephon rises into the sky and disappears into a circle of light. Maya tells Ayato to go, because he will return to her one day. Ayato wakes up to see a huge wall. Haruka comes out of a house boat and Ayato asks her what the huge wall is. She says it’s called Tokyo Jupiter and it’s where he used to live. She senses movement and hops on the edge of a boat. Ayato follows but he rocks the boat, sending both of them into the water. They go into an old clothing store and get new clothes and then go get supplies from a grocery store. They stay in a house boat and Ayato is surprised to learn from the radio that it is the year 2027, not 2015. Ayato asks if Haruka is from the future and she falls over laughing. Later Ayato asks if all his friends and mother were still alive in Tokyo Jupiter and Haruka says they are.

The next day Ayato wanders around the deserted town and at dusk, a pay phone rings. Ayato picks it up and is surprised to hear Maya. She tells him to be careful and that they’ll try to turn him against her. She says she’ll be waiting and the phone cuts off. Ayato runs off and goes towards Tokyo Jupiter. Haruka arrives on bike and tells him it takes a lot of energy to get through the wall, so Ayato can’t go back. He curses and grabs the bike and tells Haruka to get on. They go back to the boat and Haruka finds a cat. Haruka feeds it and asks Ayato if she can keep it. Ayato says it’s not up to him and the cat runs off. Haruka chases it and Ayato says she should let it go home if it wants to. Haruka hears a plane and tells Ayato to get off the boat. She sets it on fire and the next day the aircraft carrier Lilia Litvyak comes to pick them up. Haruka introduces herself as a member of TERRA.

Commentary

The first part of this episode is Ayato’s first battle. And yes, the mechs do sing, as strange as it may be. Ayato didn’t do much at first but easily destroyed Fortissimo when he thought it had killed Reika. Her death will be a driving force behind most of Ayato’s future actions. The next part of the episode had Ayato learning a few things and the beginning of the developing relationship between Ayato and Haruka, which is a focal point of the series. Can’t say I’m much of a fan of it though. The second part was a bit slow, but necessary to set up the differences between the two worlds. Ayato is now involved with TERRA and it’s time the series really started rolling.
