With a pressing need for combat-ready units during the One Year War, the Earth Federation Forces hastily converted the SP-W03 Space Pod into the RB-79 Ball. At the end of the war, some RB-79 units were customized for space work once more as the RB-79G. The RB-79G replaced the 180mm with a large crane arm and also added sub-arms, a winch and lights. In UC 0083, civilian workers used the RB-79G to help clear space debris in the ruins of Side 5. In UC 0084, former EFF pilot Matt Healy used an RB-79G as part of a coordinated effort to thwart a terror attack planned by Zeon remnants.
