In UC 0080, the Earth Federation Forces began development of the RX-78SP Gunner Gundam, a mobile suit with medium-range support capabilities. The Gunner Gundam featured a new backpack with sensors and jamming equipment, plus a retractable eye shield. Its weapons included beam sabers, vulcan guns and a long-range beam rifle that incorporated Zeon technology. However, the EFF determined that the RX-78-6 Gundam 6th fulfilled the role of the Gunner Gundam. The design never moved past the mockup stage, and the cancellation of development was made public later in the year.
