The RX-80RR Red Rider was one of three prototype mobile suits from the Pale Rider Project, which also included the RX-80BR Black Rider and RX-80WR White Rider. The Red Rider was created to gather data for the development of the RX-80PR Pale Rider. The Red Rider was equipped with ARES, an experimental system that served as a precursor to the Pale Rider’s HADES (Hyper Animosity Detect Estimate System). By activating ARES, the Red Rider’s limiters were removed, which could improve performance by 150 percent for up to 300 seconds. However, the increased performance placed incredible strain on the pilot’s body and could be fatal. To counteract this, the Red Rider was also equipped with the Rymm-Va shock resuscitation program that automatically activated if the pilot’s heart stopped beating. The Red Rider was also capable of mounting the wearable armor used by the RGM-79FP GM Striker. Its main armament was the Zweihänder, a swingable handheld shield that incorporated a large beam saber. Additional armaments included vulcan guns, a beam saber, a shield, two leg missile pods, a bullpup machine gun, a 100mm machine gun and a 180mm cannon. The Red Rider was piloted by Chase Skullgard, a member of an EFF aggressor unit comprised of Zeon defectors.
