In July 1999, human history was forever altered when a damaged Meltrandi gun destroyer appeared over Earth and crash landed on South Ataria Island in the Pacific Ocean. Initial investigations of the ship, dubbed Alien Starship-1 (ASS-1) revealed that it was manned by giant-sized aliens with advanced technology. The ship’s technology was reverse engineered and named OverTechnology, causing human technology levels to take a massive leap forward. New technologies derived from the ASS-1 included a transformation system, a space fold system, a gravity control system, a heat pile system, super dimension energy weaponry and reaction weaponry. Eventually, the crashed ship was rechristened the SDF-1 Macross as the new United Nations government embarked on a project to restore the ship and make it the flagship of U.N. Spacy. In this new configuration, the Macross was armed with super dimension energy cannon in its bow, eight beam cannons, four rail cannons and many anti-ship missile launchers and missile launchers. Two ARMD class carriers were permanently docked to the Macross and served as its arms in attack mode. Over 200 VF-1 Valkyries and nearly 600 Destroids were assigned to the ship’s forces.
Due to the Unification Wars, the Macross’ launch was delayed until the fateful date of February 7, 2009, when ships from the Zentradi army de-folded near Earth while tracking the ASS-1. As open warfare began, a mishap with the fold system dumped the Macross near Pluto. With the fold system gone, the ship then made a slow return to Earth with conventional engines. Along the way, new defensive and offensive capabilities were developed in the form of the pinpoint barrier and ARMD Attack. Following a signal sent by Misa Hayase and Hikaru Ichijyo on the ancient Protoculture city Altira, the Macross finally returned to Earth, only to find it completely destroyed by the Zentradi. A subsequent attack from a Meltrandi Gunboat destroyed the Macross‘ main gun and caused the ship to crash on Altira. The Macross entered a brief alliance with the Zentradi as Gol Boddole Zer sought to use an ancient Protoculture song as a weapon against the Meltrandi. When the Meltrandi fleet arrived before the completion of the song, the Zentradi destroyed Altira just after the Macross took off. When the Gol Boddole Zer mobile fortress destroyed thousands of Zentradi ships to take out the Meltrandi Laplamiz mobile fortress, Britai Kridanik joined forces with the Macross. The Macross smashed through the exterior of the mobile fortress, and VF-1S Strike Valkyrie pilot Hikaru Ichijyo killed Gol Boddole Zer, who was biologically linked to the mobile fortress. With his death, the fortress ceased to function, and Space War I came to a close. Afterward, the Macross became the centerpiece of a newly rebuilt Macross City on Earth.
