Gundam SEED DESTINY Phase 28: Survivors and Sacrifices

0
Summary

The Minerva fires all of its weapons as it continues to come under fire from Murasames and Dagger Ls. Shinn destroys Murasames with the Blast Impulse‘s cannons, but he comes under attack from Auel and decelerates to evade Auel’s attacks. In the air, Athrun disables Murasames and is attacked by Sting. He quickly transforms to dodge the attacks from the Chaos Gundam and a few Murasames. Yuna pushes Todaka to press the attack on the Minerva, and Todaka tells him that a real battle isn’t the same as the games he plays. Murasame squad leader Baba orders his men to ignore the mobile suits and attack only the Minerva. The Murasames go on a bombing run and damage the ship along with Rey’s ZAKU Phantom. Talia asks where Athrun and Shinn are, and Meyrin reports they’re still fighting the Chaos Gundam and Abyss Gundam. Baba’s men make a second run, and Baba transforms and prepares to fire at the Minerva‘s battle bridge until his beam rifle is destroyed from above by Kira. From the Aile Strike Rouge, Cagalli makes a radio broadcast and orders the Orb forces to retreat. She tells them not to forget the ideals of Orb and become dogs of the Alliance. Shinn is angered by Cagalli’s words and fires missiles at her, but Kira destroys them with his vulcans. Kira moves in to attack Shinn, but Shinn goes into SEED mode and dodges Kira’s attack. He attacks with his beam javelin, and Athrun attacks Kira with his beam saber. He tells Kira again to go back to Orb because his presence on the battlefield only brings confusion. Sting tries to take advantage of the situation and attacks Athrun and Kira, but Kira responds by slicing off the Chaos Gundam’s arms and gunpods. Because of their past actions, Talia orders the crew to consider the Archangel a hostile ship. Auel jumps out of the water and fires his cannons, so Shinn turns around and lets the Blast Silhouette take the brunt of the shot as he ejects it. As the Blast Silhouette explodes, Shinn uses the smoke as a cover to throw his beam javelin at the Abyss Gundam’s cockpit. The beam javelin slashes into the cockpit, and the Abyss Gundam sinks into the water before exploding.

Sting is rescued by friendly forces, and Shinn calls the Minerva to send out the Force Silhouette pack. Shinn docks with the Force Silhouette pack and receives energy from the deuterion beam to recharge the Impulse Gundam. He then takes to the skies and attacks the Windam forces. Baba and his men make another run on the Minerva, but Cagalli gets in their way to stop them. She says Orb shouldn’t attack people who were never their enemy before, and Baba says they must follow the orders of Yuna. Baba grabs the Aile Strike Rouge and tosses it aside. The Murasames resume their attack and fire missiles, which cause heavy damage to the ship and to Lunamaria’s Gunner ZAKU Warrior. Shinn destroys Baba’s wingmen, but Baba continues despite the damage and performs a kamikaze attack by slamming into one of the gun turrets. Yuna presses his forces to keep pushing because the Minerva is nearly destroyed. Shinn calls the Minerva to send out the Sword Silhouette pack so that he can destroy the Orb fleet. Cagalli moves to intercept, and Athrun chases after the Freedom Gundam. Kira tells Athrun that Cagalli is crying because she can’t stand how the situation has ended up. He asks Athrun if he can justify attacking Orb by blaming everything on Orb and Cagalli. He then goes into SEED mode and slices the Saviour Gundam apart, leaving only the torso intact. With his two swords, Shinn individually destroys the Orb ships. The Takemikazuchi approaches the Minerva from the front, and the Minerva fires all its weapons. Kira attacks from above and destroys Rey’s right arm along with one of the Minerva‘s gun turrets. Yuna yells at Todaka, and Todaka says he will carry out his orders and take responsibility for losing the Takemikazuchi. He tosses Yuna aside and tells him to escape, and he tells Amagi and his men to go to the Archangel. After destroying the rest of the Orb fleet, Shinn lands on the Takemikazuchi‘s deck and smashes the bridge, killing Todaka and destroying the ship.

Commentary

Quite a few things happen in this episode, including a few deaths. First up, Auel becomes the first of the Extendeds in the series to die. Shinn’s way of killing him was resourceful, but the ‘use the exploding armor/weapon pack’ trick was already used by Yzak in SEED. Todaka also falls at Shinn’s hands, and it’s a shame he couldn’t take Yuna with him. Athrun’s Saviour Gundam gets sliced to pieces by Kira, which is rather annoying. Athrun is too skilled a pilot to lose so easily, but this is a Gundam show, and the plot dictates that he has to upgrade to another Gundam. It’s a shame because Athrun never used the Saviour Gundam to its full potential. All he ever did was fly around and transform a lot. Kira and Cagalli’s sentimentality is misplaced, and they’re both naĂŻve if they think stopping battles is as easy as asking people to stop. Kira thinks he can do anything because of his skills, so it’s worthwhile to see the shock on his face when Shinn dodges his attacks. Although the Orb fleet has been destroyed, the Minerva looks like it’s lucky to still even be in one solid piece. With both ZAKUs damaged and the Saviour Gundam destroyed, the ship is certainly in a precarious position.
