A squad of GINN High Maneuver Type II units and several mobile pods attach flare motors to the ruins of Junius Seven. When the motors activate, Junius Seven moves out of its orbit and begins to head for Earth. A pilot named Sato declares that he will have revenge against those who spread deception across the world and forget the past. At a ZAFT observation station, officers discuss what they should do and how they should warn Earth. On the Minerva, sensors detect the movement of Junius Seven. In Talia’s quarters, Durandal receives a transmission from the Supreme Council about the situation. Durandal and Talia meet with Athrun and Cagalli to inform them about Junius Seven. Athrun doesn’t understand how it could move if its orbit was supposed to remain stable for at least one hundred years. Durandal tells Cagalli that the Minerva will be mobilizing to stop Junius Seven, and he apologizes for involving her in another dangerous situation. Cagalli asks what would happen if Junius Seven hits Earth, and Durandal says she should be fully aware of the outcome. She panics and offers to help, and Durandal tells her if he needs Orb’s help he will ask for it. In the crew lounge, Shinn, Rey, Lunamaria, Meyrin, Vino and Yolant discuss the problem of Junius Seven and how to deal with it. Rey suggests that their only course is to shatter it into smaller pieces, because if it hits Earth it will destroy everything. Yolant shrugs it off and says that if Earth is destroyed it might comfort people in the PLANTs. Cagalli hears this while walking by and comes into the lounge to yell at Yolant. Athrun tries to stop her, but she continues on and asks if this is how everyone in ZAFT thinks even after the last war. Shinn interrupts and tells Cagalli that she can’t even see Yolant isn’t being serious. Rey tells Shinn to watch what he says, and Shinn belittles Cagalli’s position. Athrun asks Shinn why he hates Orb and tells him it’d better not be for something foolish. Shinn yells at him and says that his entire family was killed because of the ideals of the Athha family. He asks Cagalli if her family considered how many people would die for the sake of their ideals. He also tells her that she knows nothing and storms out of the lounge with Vino following after him.
On Earth, the senior members of Blue Cosmos meet with the organization’s leader, Lord Djibril. They discuss the possible end of Earth, and Djibril says that he has sent Phantom Pain to investigate. He tells the older men that at first everyone will ask how Junius Seven began to move, but after it hits, they will ask why it had to happen. He says that they must give the people the answer, and the answer is to blame Coordinators. After all, they built many things in space, such as the PLANTs. He thinks that they should all evacuate from Earth and then return to unite the survivors against all Coordinators and finally wipe them out according to their secret plan. The other members agree and decide to meet with Djibril again when the situation with Junius Seven is solved. The Minerva heads out to join with the Nazca class ships Rousseau and Voltaire, which are heading to Junius Seven with meteor breaker equipment. There has been no response from the Earth Alliance forces, and Durandal tells the Minerva‘s crew that they have to help save their mother planet. Athrun brings Cagalli a drink and tells her to forget about what Shinn said. She thinks about the death of her father and says that he suffered from his own decisions as well. Athrun remembers the destruction of Junius Seven and says Shinn is too consumed by his emotions to see things another way. In his quarters, Shinn looks at pictures of his family on Maya’s cell phone. On the Voltaire, Yzak Joule tells Dearka Elsman to work efficiently in deploying the meteor breakers. Athrun runs into Lunamaria in a corridor, and when she asks him how Cagalli is, he tells her that Cagalli lost family and friends in the last war too. Athrun comes up to the bridge and asks Talia to lend him a mobile suit. She asks him if he wants to let Chairman Canaver’s arrangements for him go to waste, and he says he can’t just stand by and do nothing. Durandal approves the request because they’re not heading into battle and need as much support as possible. As Dearka supervises the deployment of the meteor breakers, the GINN HM II units attack and destroy several GuAIZ Rs. From nearby, the Girty Lue deploys its three Gundams. On the Minerva, the launch sequence is interrupted when news comes in of a battle. Loaded with battle equipment, Shinn launches in the Core Splendor, followed by Rey’s ZAKU Phantom, Lunamaria’s Gunner ZAKU Warrior and Athrun’s Blaze ZAKU Warrior.
This episode gives us a break from the action and sets up a new story arc. It also introduces some new characters and reintroduces some old ones. First, who do these mysterious GINN pilots work for, and why do they want to destroy Earth? The anti-Coordinator group Blue Cosmos seems to be alive and well even after the death of Murata Azrael. With Djibril in charge, plans are already in formation for wiping out the Coordinators after the destruction of Earth. It also seems that the Girty Lue follows orders from Blue Cosmos, which explains a lot. Because the SEED series are none too subtle about romantic relationships, it’s clear Talia and Durandal have some sexual relationship due to the fact that she’s naked in his bedroom. However, did they have a relationship before the series began, or is this just casual sex? Former Gundam pilots Yzak and Dearka also return, and things are a bit different. Yzak seems more mature, and most noticeably, he removed the scar that Kira gave him. He seems to have moved up in the ranks, and Dearka is his subordinate. Perhaps his actions in the past prevent him from being a commander himself.
