The SV-1 Mk2 Ryujin was a submersible military labor used by Japan’s Maritime Self-Defense Force. In 2000, a Ryujin unit from the destroyer JDS Tsurugi was deployed as part of a join operation between the SDF and the police to lure a genetically engineered monster into a trap at the Budokan stadium. The Ryujin’s role in the operation was to transmit sounds to attract the monster’s attention and guided it through a canal that led into the Budokan. However, the Ryujin’s sound system malfunctioned and did not deactivate at the appropriate time, causing the monster to continue its pursuit. The Ryujin’s engines were damaged when it crashed into a bridge. Rather than let the creature escape, Ground Self-Defense Force troops used a bazooka to destroy the Ryujin (and its pilots) and cleared the path for the monster.
