∀ Gundam Ep. 49: Moonlight Butterfly

0
Summary

Merrybell’s remote-controlled Bandits attack an Almaiya and destroy its beam cannon. Nearby, Sweatson’s Mahiroos attack a squad of Wodoms and destroy several of them. Merrybell joins them and destroys more Wodoms. Back at Nocis, Phil tells Bruno and Jacop that he wants them to upgrade the Turn A‘s capabilities so that it can fight the Mahiroos. They tell Harry that Dianna is worried that Loran isn’t with the Turn A. They also say they want to fight with him because Phil just bosses them around, and Harry agrees. He decides to let them join with him when he goes out to fight. Elsewhere, Loran and Fran sit in the Flat and watch Joseph fight with the Turn A. Fran thinks he’s gone too far by not letting Loran pilot the Turn A, but Loran understands what Joseph thinks. Gym thanks Guin for giving him a large supply warehouse, but he is very angry that Guin lost the Turn A. Guin promises that he will do his best to get it back. Michael presents a battle plan to invade Nocis and draw out the Soleil so that Gym can attack their flank. Corin gets into his custom Kapool and prepares to take off and fight for Dianna. Large Luziana transport planes carry Lily and Mallygan so that they can rendezvous with Dianna Counter. Elsewhere, Loran and Joseph fight inside the Turn A’s cockpit. Loran tells Joseph to stay with Fran, but he refuses. Joseph accidentally knocks Loran out from the cockpit, and Fran catches him with the Flat’s hand. Loran tells Joseph that if he sees the Turn X he has to escape. Before leaving with the Turn A, Joseph asks Loran to protect Fran because she is pregnant. On the Soleil, Dianna, Miran and Phil view a map of Ameria to see where Gym could attack from. Nearby, Pou tries to fight off Sweatson’s Mahiroos with her Sumo. Corin jumps in front of Sochie and runs ahead of her to attack Merrybell. Miashei warns Sochie not to start any trouble with him because he is a very experienced pilot.

Corin attacks Sweatson and defends himself with the Minchi drill, which slices up the Mahiroo’s feet. Corin fires the Kapool’s rocket punch hand and disables the Mahiroo. On the other side of the hill, Lily and Mallygan lead a group of Gallops up the mountain to help Aims and John. Mallygan wants to retreat, but Lily has the Gallops fire missiles at Gym’s ships. Gym gets into the Turn X and takes off from the Aspite. Joseph uses an airship as cover and jumps out to attack Gym. He fires his beam rifle, but the Turn X’s protective barrier blocks the attack. Gym lands on the ground and fires his bazooka at Dianna Counter’s Wodoms and Muttowoooos. He picks up a Wodom and destroys it with the Turn X’s weaponry. Nearby, Michael wants to retreat from the battlefield, but Guin wants to stay and watch. On the Soleil, Harry says goodbye to Kihel and takes off in his Sumo. Joseph fires the Turn A’s chest cannon and thinks he’s destroyed the Turn X, but Gym tricks him by separating. Sweatson shows up with his crippled Mahiroo to destroy the Turn A, but Gym kills him for interfering. The Turn X’s parts grapple the Turn A, and Gym examines the Turn A’s spiritual wave. The Turn X parts begin to suck energy out of both the Turn A and Joseph. The Turn X is shot at, and Gym is forced to recombine when Harry, Pou and another Sumo pilot show up. He fires the Shining Finger at them, and the blast hits the Willghem and severely damages the bridge. Harry, Pou and the other Sumo create an I-field barrier around the Turn X to hold it in place and distract Gym. Gym responds by activating the Moonlight Butterfly. As the light of the Moonlight Butterfly spreads across the sky, Corin panics and sees the Wing Gundam Zero briefly. Harry and Pou attack Gym again, but he wears them down. Loran ejects the Core Fighter from the Flat and docks with the Turn A. He takes off and is followed by Gym so they can have their final showdown.

Commentary

There’s only one episode left after this, but the action is really heating up here. There’s battles all over this episode between the combined forces of Dianna Counter and the Militia against Gym’s forces. I don’t understand why Joseph would refuse to let Loran have his suit back, and his stubbornness nearly kills Loran when he throws him out of the cockpit. However, the revelation that Fran is pregnant shows that Joseph is fighting to protect her. Too bad he was totally unprepared for the incredible power of the Turn X. Sweatson meets his end here, and it’s surprisingly at the hands of Gym himself. From his actions, it seems that he’s totally lost his mind from using the Turn X. I guess you could say he’s drunk with power. Also, why did Corin see Wing Zero when Gym activated the Moonlight Butterfly? I don’t see how the two could possibly be connected. The Turn A is back in Loran’s hands now, and we’ll see how he does this time against Gym in the final battle.
