Developed off the same base as the Type-05 Akatsuki, the Type-04 Zangetsu (meaning “slashing moon”) was an elite model knightmare frame designed specifically for Black Knights Shogun Kyoshiro Tohdoh. It boasted incredible performance as per Tohdoh’s exacting specifications, which stipulated that it be able to fight Suzaku Kururugi’s Z-01 Lancelot on equal terms. The Zangetsu’s primary weapon was the Seidotou, the special chain-sword wielded by Tohdoh’s previous customized Type-03T Gekka, and was supplemented by a slash harken and a pair of retractable machine cannon. For defensive purposes, the Zangetsu featured not only the same radiation barrier as the Type-05S/G Akatsuki Zikisan Type, but had the rather unusual capacity to use the hair-like ornamentation on its head as a shield as well. Tohdoh proved the effectiveness of his machine and his skills when he did indeed stand toe-to-toe with his former student Suzaku during the Black Knights’ battles in the Chinese Federation. Several months later, following the Black Knights’ rejection of Zero and his subsequent return as the new Emperor of Britannia, Tohdoh entered battle in an attempt to slay his former leader. The Zangetsu was badly damaged when Lelouch set off the Sakuradite in Mount Fuji to destroy a large portion of the Black Knights’ forces, but Tohdoh continued to fight until his machine was finally destroyed in a duel with Suzaku and his new Z-01Z Lancelot Albion.
