Even though the Order of the Black Knights was defeated during their attack on the Tokyo Settlement (later named “The Black Rebellion”), it was not destroyed. Several key members of the Knights evaded Britannian capture and sought asylum in the Chinese Federation. Among them was head scientist and knightmare designer Rakshata Chawla, creator of Japan’s first unique knightmares, the Type-02 Guren Mk-II and Type-03 Gekka. During the year that followed the Knights’ collapse, Rakshata returned to her homeland of India and began development of a new mass production model knightmare to replace the Type-1R Burai, itself little more than a slight modification to the already obsolete RPI-11 Glasgow. This new machine was named the Type-05 Akatsuki (Japanese for “dawn”), and drew heavily from the successful Gekka. Though its parameters were scaled back for mass production, the Akatsuki was still an excellent machine, and it saw its first action during the revived Black Knights’ battles against the eunuch generals who ruled the Chinese Federation.
