The VF-14 Vampire was a variable heavy fighter manufactured by General Galaxy and Messer for U.N. Spacy. The VF-14’s design incorporated a mix of the VF-4 Lightning III, OverTechnology and Zentradi technology. A prototype version competed in Project Nova to become U.N. Spacy’s main variable fighter, but it lost to Shinsei Industry’s VF-11 Thunderbolt. However, the design was adopted as the VF-14 in 2028 for use by emigrant and survey fleets. The VF-14’s armaments included a 35mm Gatling gun pod, two Mauler medium-bore beam guns and a pair of Bifors missile pods. In 2043, a research fleet in the Varauta 3198EX system discovered and accidentally revived extra-dimensional beings known as the Protodeviln on Varauta IV. The members of the survey fleet were brainwashed to serve as the Varauta army, and their captured VF-14s became the basis for the Varauta’s new Fz-109A and Fz-109F Elgersoln variable fighters. Two years later, the Varauta encountered the Macross 7 emigrant fleet and initiated a year-long conflict later known as the Protodeviln War.
