The VF-17S Nightmare was a variant of the VF-17 design that was typically assigned to team leaders. Compared to the VF-17D, the VF-17S model featured a different head design that included an extra sensor and two additional anti-aircraft laser guns. The VF-17S also utilized more powerful engines than the VF-17D that produced additional thrust. During the Protodeviln War of 2045-46, the VF-17S was used by the Diamond Force unit on the Macross 7 fleet. A red colored unit was also used by City 7 Mayor Milia Fallyna Jenius, a famed ace pilot and Space War I veteran.
