The VF-1D Valkyrie was a two-seat variant of the VF-1A manufactured by Stonewell and Bellcom for use by U.N. Spacy. It was often used for advanced training, although it was fully combat capable. The VF-1D used a different head design that had two camera eyes and mounted a second anti-air laser cannon. In February 2009, circumstances forced civilian pilot Hikaru Ichijyo to take part in the opening battle of Space War I when the Zentradi attacked South Ataria Island during the launch ceremony for the Macross. During his brief time in the VF-1D, Hikaru accidentally caused damage to multiple buildings in Macross City and scored a kill on a Regult combat pod, which revealed to him the secret of giant-sized aliens.
