The VF-27 Lucifer was an advanced variable fighter developed by the Macross Galaxy Variable Fighter Development Arsenal (aka Guld Works). The VF-27’s design lineage followed from General Galaxy’s earlier VF-22S Sturmvogel II. The VF-27’s abilities exceeded those of the VF-25 Messiah, and the use of illegally cybernetically enhanced pilots allowed for high performance beyond what a normal human body could endure. The VF-27 utilized a brainwave control system developed from the YF-21’s Brain Direct Image System (BDI). This system sent information directly to the brain of the cybernetically enhanced pilot and served as the primary control system, with manual controls reduced to emergency backup. The VF-27 featured an atypical four engine design that exceeded the overall thrust of the VF-25. Its base armaments were equivalent to a VF-25 with a Super Pack.

Weapons included a 20mm beam gun, two heavy beam machine guns, a beam gun pod, a bulletproof shield, two high-speed machine guns (or beam machine guns), a retractable knife, a pinpoint barrier system and four internal micro-missile launchers. The VF-27 was produced in standard (β) and commander (γ) variants that featured different head designs and could be manned or unmanned. Because the Macross Galaxy fleet hid the existence of the VF-27, it was classified by NUNS as the YF-27. During the Vajra War in 2059, a secret cabal on the Macross Galaxy fleet used the VF-27 as part of its plan to seize control of the Vajra, and this often involved engaging in battles against the SMS forces in the Macross Frontier emigration fleet.
