Victory Gundam Ep. 48: Fading Life, Blooming Life

0
Summary

Because of Tassilo’s betrayal, the League Militaire and EFF fleets have been able to take advantage and attack. Mutterma orders his fleet to clear a path for Angel Halo so that it can land on Earth. On the Jeanne D’Arc, Mubarac orders his gun turret operators to not target Tassilo’s Amalthea. Uso flies through space and destroys several Zoloats for getting in his way. More Zoloats attack him, but Odelo and Tomas destroy them and tell Uso to find Maria. With all his other ships destroyed, Tassilo’s men panic and flee the bridge. He calls out for Fuala to help him, and Maria says that the living shouldn’t ask the dead for help. Uso approaches the bridge and demands that Tassilo hand over Maria. Maria tells Uso that because she was weak Kagatie was able to build Angel Halo and someone like Tassilo was able to scheme for it. She says everything is her fault and that he should kill her along with Tassilo. Uso says he can’t because while someone else may replace her as Queen, she is Shahkti’s mother. Maria breaks away from Tassilo, and he shoots her in the chest several times with a gun. On Angel Halo, Shahkti feels her mother’s death and panics, causing Angel Halo to temporarily overload. In rage, Uso sticks his beam saber through the bridge and vaporizes Tassilo. Maria’s body floats out into space, and Uso puts her back in the bridge and destroys the Amalthea. On the Adrastea, Cronicle hears that Tassilo’s fleet has been destroyed and realizes that his sister is dead. He wants to immediately launch in his Rig Contio, but Katejina convinces him to go to Angel Halo instead. She wants to see what his true ability is. The White Ark rendezvous with the Reineforce Junior for supplies, and everyone stops to eat for a minute. Uso doesn’t want to eat anything, but Marbet tells him he should anyway. Karlmann floats over to Uso goes over to a window. Uso puts him in a normal suit and takes him outside to see space. Marbet asks him what he’s doing, and Uso says Karlmann told him Shahkti is on Angel Halo. The Reineforce Junior sends out a message that all crew and pilots are to immediately proceed to the Jeanne D’Arc. After arriving, Uso and all the other pilots are hurried into the meeting room.

Mubarac gives everyone a briefing on Angel Halo and warns them that it can affect their brains as well and make them like infants. He says that the EFF’s fleet has been mobilized, but it won’t arrive before Angel Halo lands on Earth. Therefore, Hangerg says they have to destroy it with what forces they have. Jinn asks if he is sure about that, and Hangerg says he is going on instinct. Uso thinks Maria’s death is a problem, and Hangerg tells him that everyone’s morale is up because of Uso’s battles. The meeting ends, and Marbet tells Uso that his father was praising him just now. Uso thanks Hangerg for helping him out before, and Hangerg wishes him good luck and leaves. Tomas and Odelo load cargo onto the Reineforce Junior in their Gun Blastors, and Odelo daydreams and causes several boxes to float away. Warren and Elisha bring the boxes back, and Elisha says she feels useless because she thinks she exists only to be protected. Warren tells her that if not for her Odelo couldn’t have become a pilot. On the White Ark, Uso wonders if men are good only for destruction. Marbet asks why, and he says it’s because women create life while men destroy it. Marbet tells him that it’s a man’s job to protect new life, though she thinks his father is a bit of a battle fanatic. He thinks his mother was the same, and Marbet says Uso is different because they raised him to be a benevolent person. Uso thinks that if he were a battle fanatic he wouldn’t feel the way he does. He doesn’t want Marbet’s child to experience what he has, and she promises to be careful. On the Adrastea, Cronicle sees that Mutterma wants to use him. He tells Katejina that he wants to destroy the League Militaire and make the Earth Federation collapse. Then, he wants to expose Mutterma and Kagatie to the effects of Angel Halo and get them out of the way. Uso and all the others play pass the Haro in space with their remaining free time. The League Militaire and EFF fleets mobilize, and Uso launches in the V2 Buster Gundam as Angel Halo begins its descent to Earth.

Commentary

There’s quite a lot going on in this episode. First, we get the tragic death of Maria, followed by a well-deserved death for Tassilo. Being vaporized by a beam saber is a pretty bad way to die. Following the non-stop battles that have occurred in the last few episodes, the second half of this episode takes a much needed break. It focuses on character development, and we get to see how much everyone has changed since the beginning of the series. There’s been a lot of sorrow and suffering up to now, and there’s still quite a bit more to pass in the remaining three episodes of the series.
