VOTOMS Ep. 47: Disaster

0
Summary

Lepard’s men are bothered by the loss of Fyana, but he reminds them that their other objective is to gain possession of Quent’s technology. As Gotho and the others fly through space in the shuttle, Chirico’s Fatty comes under attack from several Scopedogs. He fights off several of them, but one manages to attack him from behind with a bazooka and blow off his left leg. The shuttle enters the range of the Balarant fleet and comes under attack from Balarant Peteshia space fighters. As the space fighters fire missiles at the shuttle, Gotho desperately calls the Balarant fleet and says he knows Rochina. The shuttle is taken aboard Rochina’s Leslion and the three of them are brought to the bridge. Rochina orders that they be taken to the brig, and when Coconna complains, Rochina tells them they’re all lucky he doesn’t execute them. The three are taken to the brig and locked up with Fyana. She apologizes for them always getting in trouble because of her. Coconna admits that Fyana is prettier than she is, and Vanilla says that he likes his girls plain. Elsewhere, Killy’s men debate whether or not they should attack the Balarant fleet to capture Fyana before the Gilgamesh do. Outnumbered, Rochina orders his fleet to retreat, but his ship’s engines are damaged. He still wants to find Chirico and spots him flying through space carrying a headless Scopedog. Rochina brings Chirico aboard and takes him to an undamaged section of the ship. Chirico asks Rochina if he plans to use Fyana again, and Rochina responds that Fyana may be his trump card in scoring a ceasefire with the Gilgamesh. In Gomor’s tower, Quent’s defense system activates and fires bursts of energy into space which destroy Gilgamesh and Balarant ships.

As more ships are destroyed, Chirico recommends to Rochina that he shut off the ship’s engines. He’s not sure why that works, but he knows it does. Lepard sends the latest data to Battentain, and Battentain orders him to land on Quent and take control of the technology. Lepard sets a course for Quent, but his ship is destroyed by the defense system. Chirico, Rochina and the others leave the ship in a small shuttle. Chirico tells Vanilla to cut the engines and fly the shuttle only with inertia. The energy from the defense system passes through the shuttle without destroying it. On Quent’s surface, the Schmitel twins report to Killy that their systems have been overloaded while attempting to analyze the data on Quent. On Melkia, Battentain meets with senior officers to discuss the current situation. One of them suggests convening the Galactic Assembly, but Battentain instead decides to seek an informal investigation with the help of the Balarant. Rochina argues with the others about his plans for them until they detect the Secret Society Flagship on their sensors. Killy hails them and orders that they surrender immediately. Rochina asks Killy to identify himself, and Killy says that doesn’t matter because he knows Fyana is on the shuttle. The shuttle docks inside the flagship and several soldiers escort everyone to the bridge. Rochina and Killy are shocked to see each other. Killy looks at Chirico and says he would like to see the power of a man even greater than a PS. He then orders that Rochina and Chirico’s friends be executed. Suddenly, the ship’s systems malfunction for no apparent reason. Chirico utters the name Wiseman, and Rochina and Killy recognize the name because Wiseman is the mysterious intelligence on Quent. The ship automatically sets a new course, and Killy figures it must be Wiseman’s will. Chirico has the feeling that the fate of everything depends on his group.

Commentary

The battle between the Gilgamesh and Balarant ends with their mutual destruction by Wiseman. This prompts Battentain to suggest working with the Balarant to investigate Quent and its technology. Wiseman certainly possesses incredible power, but what does he have planned for Chirico, Rochina and Killy? On a side note, those who enjoy spotting animation errors should take note of how the left leg of Chirico’s Fatty is blown off by a Scopedog, only to magically reappear intact moments later.
