The XGF-02 Gundam Lfrith was a prototype mobile suit developed by the Ochs Earth Corporation with cooperation from the Vanadis Institute. The Vanadis Institute conducted research on body function augmentation technology known as GUND. This technology, seen as necessary for human advancement in space, was powered by Permet, an element discovered in mineral deposits across the solar system. Ochs Earth funded Vanadis to repurpose GUND technology for military applications in mobile suits, which led to the creation of the GUND Format. Mobile suits that gained cross-disciplinary fighting abilities were collectively labeled GUND-ARMs, or GUNDAMs for short. The Gundam Lfrith was equipped with a chest-mounted Shell Unit, a control unit that allowed for the transfer of massive amounts of data between the mobile suit and pilot. The suit’s performance was categorized by different Permet score levels, and higher levels resulted in increased strain on the pilot’s body, with the potential for permanent damage or death. The Gundam Lfrith featured a variety of armaments, including a receiver gun (capable of generating a beam blade), beam sabers and beam vulcan guns. Its most impressive armament was its bit staves – remote weapons capable of devastating all-range attacks. The bit staves served multiple functions and could attack onto the backpack for Bit on Form mode to improve maneuverability. They could also dock with the receiver gun to power it up into the GUND-BIT rifle, or combine into the Compo GUND-BIT shield.
In A.S. 101, the Mobile Suit Development Council decided to ban GUND Format research and sent a black ops team from the Dominicus corps to eliminate all Vanadis personnel in the asteroid laboratory FĂłlkvangr. During the confusion of the battle, Elnora Samaya piloted the Gundam Lfrith into combat but was unaware that her four-year-old daughter Ericht (aka Eri) had been registered with the system – an action that would have long-term consequences. Elnora and Eri escaped the massacre that came to be known as the Vanadis Incident, but Eri’s body was unable to survive in space. Because of Eri’s compatibility with the GUND Format, Elnora preserved her biometric code within the Gundam Lfrith’s data storm. Elnora, taking on the pseudonym Prospera Mercury, further developed the Gundam Lfrith into the XVX-016 Gundam Aerial to keep Eri alive.
