When ZAFT decided to turn the ZGMF-X56S/δ Chaos Impulse Gundam into a separate mobile suit, it developed the XMF-P192P Proto Chaos. This experimental non-transformable mobile armor served as the basis for the Second Stage mobile suit ZGMF-X24S Chaos Gundam. The Proto Chaos’ main armament consisted of four mobile weapons pods, which were an improved version of the DRAGOON (Disconnected Rapid Armament Group Overlook Operation Network) system previously used by the YMF-X000A Dreadnought Gundam and ZGMF-X13A Providence Gundam. The weapon pods utilized a quantum communications system to transfer data and were designed for use by normal pilots. The weapon pods also featured thrusters and small wings that allowed for use in space or in Earth’s atmosphere. In addition, the Proto Chaos was armed with a pair of beam claws stored in its feet. Only six Proto Chaos units were produced, and three of them were damaged beyond repair during testing. On October 2, C.E. 73, artificially enhanced Extended pilot Sting Oakley of the Earth Alliance’s secret Phantom Pain unit stole the Chaos Gundam during a raid on the Armory One PLANT. In response, the Chaos Gundam’s original civilian test pilot, Courtney Hieronymus, headed into space in a Proto Chaos and engaged a pair of GAT-S02R N Dagger N mobile suits in combat.
