Following the successful testing of the YMS-09 Prototype Dom at Zeon’s captured California Base during the One Year War, one of the prototypes was modified for use in desert and tropical climates. Designated the YMS-09D Dom Tropical Test Type, the modified prototype now mounted a coolant tank on its backpack and a short-range communications antenna on the head. Several standard MS-09 Doms were later converted to the Tropical Test Type, with a dozen serving in units on the frontlines in Northern Africa, including the Karakal Team commanded by Roy Greenwood, whose personal Dom Tropical Test Type was nicknamed “Thunder Cat.” In November UC 0079, one Tropical Test Type used by the Noisy Fairy team in North America was heavily customized into the long-range support unit MS-09 Dom Gnomides. The Tropical Test Type served as the basis for the later model MS-09F/Trop Dom Tropen, which saw action during and after the One Year War.
