Owing to its large production run, ZAFT’s ZGMF-1017 GINN fell into the hands of many parties, including Serpent Tail mercenary Elijah Kiel. Elijah’s custom unit initially featured only two modifications: a blue color scheme and a sword-like crest on the head replacing the standard head crest. Although Elijah was a Coordinator, his piloting skills were lower than those of a typical ZAFT pilot. By C.E. 73, Elijah upgraded to a customized ZGMF-1001 ZAKU Phantom.
