Owing to its large production run, ZAFT’s ZGMF-1017 GINN fell into the hands of many parties, including the pirate Otark. His unit was so heavily customized that it barely resembled the original GINN. The GINN’s head and torso were combined with a heavy tank body that featured 16 missile launchers. Its arms were also replaced with longer, skinnier arms that were equipped with heavy shields. In early C.E. 71, Otark and fellow pirate Elisa Azana attacked Junk Guild mechanic Lowe Guele in the Debris Belt near Junius Seven in an attempt to steal the MBF-P02 Gundam Astray Red Frame. However, Lowe managed to outwit both pirates and defeated them.
