In the locker room, several girls asks Shirley about Lelouch, but she says nothing has happened between them. Viletta points out that Shirley liked him, so much so that she shot her. Viletta says it hasn’t been easy to live with the woman who shot her. Shirley runs away and sees every student in school as having a mask over their face. She sees Lelouch, but his face also turns into a mask and drops away, revealing his Zero costume. Shirley then wakes up from her dreams and thinks about how Lelouch was responsible for her father’s death. In China, Li and his forces fight off other Chinese forces. Lelouch examines the combat situation and tells Rolo that their enemies are just local armies. Shirley rides a subway train and thinks about how Lelouch is Zero, Viletta is a soldier, Kallen is a Black Knights member and Nunnally is the governor. She starts to wonder what’s true and what’s false. Elsewhere, Lelouch checks out a subway train at the Ikebukuro Station and gives written orders to two Geassed employees. At the same station, Shirley meets with Suzaku, who asks what she called him for. He’s surprised when Lelouch suddenly shows up. At the secret base, Viletta asks Rolo why he betrayed them, since he was sent directly by the Geass Order. Just then an alert comes in, and Jeremiah kills several guards outside the school on his way to the clubhouse. Sayoko blocks his path and rushes at him with several ninja daggers. At the Geass Order, Bartley tells Cornelia that the Order really believes that it wants to destroy the gods. Cornelia thinks that’s crazy because she doesn’t believe in any gods. V.V. appears and tells them that gods who are old men with beards or winged goddesses don’t exist, and Cornelia throws a knife at his head. She tells Bartley they can’t let their guard down around anyone even if they look like a child, and V.V. pulls the knife out. Sayoko drops a smoke charge and throws several daggers at his heart, but they cause no damage. Rolo appears and uses Geass to freeze Jeremiah’s mind. Sayoko rushes in to attack, but Jeremiah’s Geass Canceller kicks in and frees him. Viletta shows up and tells Jeremiah that Lelouch is at Ikebukuro Station and asks him to free her. At the station, Shirley walks with Lelouch and Suzaku, wondering what to do. Lelouch wonders what’s going on, and Suzaku can’t bring himself to accept that Lelouch isn’t Zero. Sayoko’s wounds are tended to in the secret base, and Rolo asks Viletta if she’s betraying Lelouch. She tells Rolo that if he leaves, he can still surprise Jeremiah. Shirley thinks about telling Suzaku that Lelouch is Zero. The three arrive at the border between the settlement and the ghetto, and Suzaku says he’ll eliminate that border some day. She wonders if they were accomplices and jumps onto the border wall. She says everyone is a fake and loses her footing. She falls, but Lelouch catches her and Suzaku catches him. She struggles and tells Lelouch to let her go, but he says he doesn’t want to lose any more important people. She relents, and Suzaku pulls them up. Shirley recalls that something similar happened when they were chasing Arthur. Lelouch then gets a call from Rolo about Jeremiah, and Suzaku asks who that was. Shirley interrupts and says her issue is more important. She then leaves with Suzaku, and Lelouch thinks that’s better given what will happen soon.
Several Geassed security guards shoot at Jeremiah, but the bullets bounce off of him. He uses his Geass Canceller and takes them out, and Lelouch responds by unleashing smoke discharges. Shirley tells Suzaku that she likes Lelouch and asks Suzaku if he hates him. He says he used to like him, and Shirley thinks it’s odd how they used to get along so well before. He says he can’t forgive Lelouch, and Shirley says nothing is unforgivable. She thinks that Suzaku just doesn’t want to forgive Lelouch, but she forgave him long ago. As people run out of the station, Suzaku runs over and takes command of the situation. In China, Tamaki tells Ohgi that he has an urgent message from Zero. When Ohgi calls back, he’s surprised to hear Viletta’s voice. Shirley tries to call Lelouch, but she can’t get through. A police officer asks her to get into a car as per Suzaku’s orders, but she runs into the station. She finds an unconscious guard and picks up his gun. Lelouch runs to the train platform and comments that “Orange” is persistent. Jeremiah says it isn’t persistence, but rather loyalty, which Lelouch says he doesn’t like. Lelouch then activates several Gefjun disturbers on the subway train that stop Jeremiah in his tracks since his cyborg parts use Sakuradite. Lelouch plans to use the Gefjun disturbers to immobilize the city in the same way across the entire subway track. Rolo runs into Shirley, and she asks him if he likes Lelouch. Lelouch asks for the location of the Geass Order, and Jeremiah marches forward, saying he has his own questions. Jeremiah asks him why he fights against his own homeland, and Lelouch answers that it’s because he’s Lelouch Vi Britannia and lost his future. Jeremiah reveals that he was there, and his first mission was to protect Empress Marianne, whom he adored. Lelouch realizes that Jeremiah didn’t come to kill him. Jeremiah says that his master is not V.V., but Marianne, so Lelouch deactivates the Gefjun disturbers and asks Jeremiah for his loyalty. Rolo tells Shirley that Lelouch is his only brother, and she asks him to help her protect Lelouch and Nunnally, which causes Rolo to activate his Geass. As Lelouch runs through the empty station, he spots Shirley lying on the ground in a pool of her own blood. Shirley tells Lelouch she’s glad she could see him before the end. She tells him she was scared when all her memories returned, and she points out that Lelouch has been fighting the world by himself. She tells him she loves him, even though he killed her father, and even after he made her forget everything. Even after her memories were overridden by Charles, she fell in love with him again. She says that no matter how many times she’s reborn, she’ll keep falling in love with him. Lelouch attempts to use Geass to order her to live, but it has no effect and she dies. With Shirley dead, Lelouch screams in agony.
If anything, the last episode set things into motion with Jeremiah using his Geass Canceller to sweep Tokyo and undo everything Lelouch has put in place. This had the unintended side effect of restoring Shirley’s memories, and she spends a lot of this episode understandably confused about many things. That would probably happen to anyone who’s had their memories erased twice. At the same time, Jeremiah is out to hunt down Lelouch and ends up fighting ninja maid Sayoko, but we learn his motivations are quite different. If this seems out of the blue to some, it’s note. In the picture dramas from season 1, he said the same thing to Viletta and explained that he wanted to become the Knight of One to make up for his first failure to protect Marianne. With Shirley, she unknowingly brings her own doom upon herself by mentioning Nunnally to Rolo. We know he wants to replace her as Lelouch’s sibling, so he of course lashes out and shoots Shirley for bringing up Lelouch’s real sibling. It’s kind of sad to see Lelouch desperately try to save her with Geass, but it just reinforces that his actions have negative consequences for those around him. In this case, it might hit closer to home since she was an innocent bystander, rather than someone who was part of the fight.
