Space Runaway Ideon (aka Legendary Giant God Ideon) is a TV series that aired in Japan from 1980-1981. Directed by Yoshiyuki Tomino, it served as his next project after the cancelation of Mobile Suit Gundam. Other creative staff on the series include mechanical designers Submarine and Kunio Okawara, character designer Tomonori Kogawa and composer Koichi Sugiyama. The series focuses on Cosmo Yuki, one of a group of Earth colonists on the planet Solo who come under attack from the Buff Clan. Escaping on the excavated Solo Ship, Cosmo and his comrades must rely on the power of the legendary robot Ideon in their never-ending struggle for survival against the Buff Clan. The series was prematurely canceled after 39 episodes and was followed by a pair of movies in 1982. The first movie served as a recap of the TV story, while the second provided the true ending. In 2017, the series received its first English language released on the streaming service HIDIVE, followed two years later by a home video release from Sentai Filmworks’ Maiden Japan label.
