Full Metal Panic! Ep. 2: I Want to Protect You

0
Summary

Back on the Tuatha de Danaan, Kalinin and Tessa comment on the difficulty of Sousuke’s mission. Tessa mentions that if their operation goes well they will no longer need to protect Chidori and other “Whispered” candidates. In school, Sousuke mistakes a bust Chidori was carrying for a terrorist and smashes it. Detained in school, he asks Weber to follow Chidori home while Mao complains about the high prices in Tokyo. Several similar rescue attempts leave Sousuke bruised. Weber treats his wounds back at the apartment while the three discuss the situation. Weber can’t understand what the KGB would want from Chidori, who looks quite normal compared to teenage mercenaries like themselves. Meanwhile, on a bridge, Gaulon shows two KGB officers a photo of the M9 attacking the Hind and says it’s one of Mithril’s, a mysterious counter-terrorism mercenary commando group. He comments that had the KGB’s research been completed, the balance of the world would tip, which is why Mithril interfered. He also mentions that obtaining another test subject will be harder and thus cost the KGB more. The larger KGB officer is angered by the man’s greed and calls him a Chinaman. Gaulon answers that he’s not Chinese and shoots the officer. To the remaining one, he shows a photo of Chidori and suggests they go after her as a test subject for the “Whispered” project. At school, Chidori assigns duties to the students for an upcoming field trip.

At a burger shop, Chidori and her friends are discussing how Sousuke instantly agreed to take trash duty while Sousuke observes them through a hole in his newspaper. A suspicious looking man gets up and leaves his suitcase behind. Chidori notices this and attempts to return it to him. Panicking, Sousuke knocks over the tables and runs outside, saving Chidori from being hit by a truck while Weber stops it with the M9. However, it turns out that the suitcase only contained a doll and some other girl-related products instead of the bomb Sousuke had suspected. Chidori is confused and Sousuke says it was a coincidence that he was passing by. She’s grateful but the mood is ruined when Sousuke was holding and squeezing her breast. He follows her onto a train but she notices him by way of his outdated newspaper. He denies her accusation and claims he’s on the train also by coincidence. To reveal his fraud she immediately gets off the train at the next stop before he could, forcing him to jump out the window. She’s dumbfounded by this but he tells her it’s a coincidence as well that he wanted to get off. They sit on a bench and she asks him about his girlfriend. He replies that he has no such person. She calls him weird, he calls her special and she blushes. Back in the city, Weber nearly steps on a dog with his M9 and Gaulon walks away while tossing the gum he was chewing. In the truck Weber notices the gum had landed on the M9’s leg but suspects nothing. Kyoko asks Chidori on the phone about what happened with Sousuke. Chidori denies it and laughs while Kyoko reminds her of tomorrow’s test.

Commentary

While this episode was still comedic like the last, it managed to advance the plot a bit. We now know that Sousuke, Weber and Mao work for an organization called Mithril and Gaulon plans to kidnap Chidori for the “Whispered” project, whatever that is. Why is a small girl the captain of a submarine and why was Sousuke squeezing Chidori’s breast? I can’t seem to figure that one out. The show needs to get more serious from here on. Hopefully the action will pick during the field trip, and we all know that field trips seldom go as planned in anime.
