Full Metal Panic! Ep. 5: Whispered – The One to be Whispered

Summary

Chidori can’t stand the constant stream of information and screams at the scientist to let her out. The scientist opens the tube and tries to restrain her but Chidori accidentally elbows her and knocks her out. She tries to escape but the scientist points a gun at her. Chidori thinks it’s a bluff, so the scientist fires two warning shots at the wall, prompting the guards to rush in. They ask why she’s using a pistol, but she orders them to just restrain Chidori. She’s about to inject Chidori with something when Sousuke tasers the guards and points a gun at her, demanding to know the purpose of the experiment. When she refuses to tell, he fires a couple of warning shots. The scientist finally confesses that they were trying to determine if Chidori was a Whispered. Before Sousuke can ask more questions, another guard comes and opens fire on them. Weber wonders how Sousuke is doing, and Mao replies that he’ll be fine. Weber thinks Sousuke’s starting to fall for Chidori and wouldn’t leave her behind despite orders. Mao tells him not to put Sousuke in the same league as him, but Weber isn’t so sure. Sousuke shoots the guard and tries to escort Chidori out, but she refuses to go out in the short robe she’s wearing. Sousuke pushes her down when more guards start firing, but she beats on him thinking he’s trying to grope her. On the plane, the students are trying to comfort the teacher who’s crying for letting Chidori get taken, and Shinji gets berated when he asks about Sousuke. Sousuke gives Chidori his school uniform jacket and they run to the other truck. While driving, Chidori demands an explanation, and Sousuke tells her that he’s a soldier sent by Mithril to protect her from terrorist organizations. Chidori’s finding this a bit hard to swallow, and thinks that Sousuke is just fantasizing. Sousuke dodges machine gun fire from Savages, and smashes the truck through the door of an arm slave hangar. He climbs up to a Savage and opens the cockpit. Chidori yells at him to stop and tells him that an amateur can’t drive an arm slave. Sousuke retorts that he’s not an amateur, but a specialist. As the Savage starts up, the enemy Savages break into the hangar and start firing. Sousuke dodges and rams one of the Savages, then uses its machine gun to take them out, much to Chidori’s amazement.

The alarm is sounded in the base. Chidori rides in the Savage’s hand. As they get out, they’re assaulted by enemy APCs. Sousuke dodges their cannons and takes them out. Chidori tells him that they can’t escape without the rest of the students, and tells her to leave them to his comrades. They escape to the woods outside the base. Weber and Mao launch in their M9 arm slaves from the Tuatha de Danaan’s catapult. When Sousuke reaches a river, they’re fired upon but nothing is picked up on the Savage’s sensors. Sousuke shoots an incoming grenade but can’t react in time to shoot the second one so he tries to shield Chidori from the blast. A shot hits the Savage’s legs and Sousuke realizes that the grenade was a decoy dud just as another shot blows the Savage’s right arm. Gaulon approaches them in the Codarl arm slave and Sousuke fires at him, but none of the shots hit and Gaulon blows the Savage’s other arm. Gaulon shoots the Savage square in the chest and exposes the cockpit. He finally recognizes Sousuke and laughs, asking him how Kalinin is doing. Sousuke asks why he’s still alive, and Gaulon replies that he was saved by a metal plate in his head. Gaulon says that he still needs Chidori because she has the Black Technology inside her head, which contains the theory for the Lambda Driver. Gaulon is about to finish Sousuke off when Weber destroys his gun. Gaulon jumps back to dodge the shots and Weber detaches his arm slave’s parachute and lands. Chidori recognizes his voice as the lost tourist from before. Sousuke gets out of the Savage and sees explosions in the distance. Weber tells him to return to base within five minutes to catch the transport planes. Sousuke warns him to be careful with the Codarl. Mao uses her M9’s monomolecular cutter to saw open the luggage compartment on the passenger plane. She grabs the bomb and throws it skywards where it explodes. The UN rescue squads enter the plane to escort the passengers out. Clutching his wound, Sousuke runs with Chidori back into the base. Gaulon dodges all of Weber’s shots and the latter notes that the enemy hasn’t retaliated yet. As the students are being loaded onto the transports, the teacher tells one of the soldiers that Chidori is still missing. Mao tells her that Chidori will get on the other plane while Shinji asks about Sousuke. Gaulon continue to dodge Weber’s shots and Mao urges him to hurry. Weber tricks Gaulon into thinking he ran out of ammo. Gaulon rushes towards him with a monomolecular cutter and Weber throws his anti-tank dagger at him. Gaulon swats it away and finds himself staring at the barrel of the M9’s rifle, which Weber fires at point-blank range. Mao can’t contact Weber anymore, and the planes take off without Sousuke and Chidori.

Commentary

Lots of action in this episode. Chidori finally realizes that Sousuke is not your average high school student, kind of similar to how Meryl realized who Vash the Stampede is in the fifth episode of Trigun. Just as the term Whispered has been clarified a bit, Black Technology and Lambda Driver pop up to add to the mystery. Gaulon’s Codarl is pretty agile for an arm slave, what with all the jumping around that he does with it. Since he’s already survived a fatal shot before, it won’t be surprising if he survives Weber’s attack.
