GaoGaiGar Ep. 20: Mr. Zonder

0
Summary

3G repairs GaoGaiGar and begins plans for remodeling the Goldion Hammer. Mikoto asks if this means Guy won’t need to use Hell and Heaven anymore and Guy says it will as long as no other Zonders appear for now. Mikoto returns her pendant to Guy and says that she’s not fit to be a 3G member, but Guy tells her that what happened is the Zonderian’s fault, not hers. Mamoru, Sueo and Sunou hurry inside their school building to reach class in time. They’re stopped by the vice-principal who’s angry at how they left their shoe lockers open. He’s angered even more when he finds Sueo’s discarded test paper with a low score on the floor. The kids run to class before he can rattle off all the school rules. As he complains that kids these days don’t follow the rules, the vice-principal hears a strange sound coming from one of the bathroom stalls and opens it to find Penchinon waiting with a Zonder crystal. Mamoru senses the Zonder as the entire school comes alive and tentacles pop out of the walls, forcing everyone inside to hold mops and start cleaning the room. Mamoru and his friends manage to slip out, and the tentacles spring towards the passing Ikumi Kaidou but stop short. The Zonder’s voice booms all over the school, ordering everyone to clean up the place. As they try to escape, Sueo thinks the Zonder is the same one that attacked them several times before while Mamoru realizes it’s actually the vice-principal. The tentacles grab Sueo and the rest try to fight them off using umbrellas. Sunou tries to hit the tentacles with a fire extinguisher but ends up dropping it. It goes off and the foam ends up repelling the tentacles and masking the kids from the Zonder’s sensors. They reach the staff lounge and try to contact the outside but the phone lines are down and Mamoru’s pager messages are getting scrambled. Reiko spots a police car outside and tries to open the windows to call for it. The kids start wailing on the windows to draw attention but the Zonder camouflages the panes so that no one outside can see them. Hana then notices doppelgangers of them playing in the school yard, and Mamoru deduces the Zonder must be showing holograms using the projectors in the school’s basement. Reiko lifts an entire desk and throws it at the windows, but it smashes helplessly without causing so much as a dent. The police car, actually Volfogg, monitors the holograms without suspecting anything and leaves. The kids hole themselves up in the library and notice the other students being force fed their lunches just before a food cart attacks them.

The kids escape to the science lab where Sueo and Sunou complain that the situation is hopeless. Mamoru tries to rile them up but they’re too overcome by fear and hunger. The Zonder suddenly appears before them and Mamoru tries to purify it without exposing himself, but it constricts him with its tentacles. Hana starts wailing on the Zonder and the rest take courage from her example and follow suit. Volfogg returns for another inspection, so the Zonder projects the hologram again after ensnaring everyone. In desperation, Reiko uses all her strength to pull one of the tentacles, which yanks the Zonder’s head back and distorts the hologram long enough for Volfogg to realize what’s going on. The Zonder detaches the science lab from the school building and morphs into EI-19, which frees everyone in the school. Volfogg combines into Big Volfogg and signals 3G, who dispatch HyoRyu and EnRyu immediately while hurrying the repairs on GaoGaiGar. Volfogg tries to lure EI-19 away from the school, but before he could attack it reveals Mamoru and his friends as its hostages. EI-19 lifts off and tries to crush Big Volfogg but HyoRyu and EnRyu arrive just in time to hold it up. It uses its tentacles to electrocute the 3G robots and falls on top of them. GaoGaiGar arrives and uses the Dividing Driver to create the repression field, allowing the robots to escape. Guy blocks a shot from EI-19 and asks for permission to use Hell and Heaven. Taiga tells him to hold out for the Pliers and the Goldion Hammer which are en-route to their location. Mikoto pinpoints the location of the kids on EI-19 and the 3G robots get into position to perform Diamond Formation. ChoRyuJin is formed while Big Volfogg distracts EI-19. Guy uses the Dimension Pliers to grab hold of the Goldion Hammer and dives toward EI-19. Big Volfogg uses his Mirror Coating to reflect himself off of ChoRyuJin’s Mirror Shield and grab the kids and Zonder core just before Guy destroys EI-19’s body. GaoGaiGar’s body is ok, but the Pliers are wrecked. On a later school day, Mamoru, Sueo and Sunou once again make a dash to make it to class, but this time they remember to close their shoe lockers properly and are greeted by a much more cheerful vice-principal.

Commentary

This episode goes back to a more light hearted tone, and harkens back to the first episode when it was showing how the Zonder robo reconfigures its smaller components as equipment and weapons. Penchinon has gone back to his previous MO of targeting Mamoru, who just narrowly avoided blowing his cover but not without Hana noticing his brief hair color change. The yet unnamed Kaidou shows up once again to remind us that not only is he still here but there’s more to him than meets the eye, as evidenced by his ability to repel the Zonder tentacles. I’m not quite sure how Volfogg managed to phase through the Zonder and grab the kids along with the core, so we can chalk it up to an unexplained ability of his Mirror Coating. On GaoGaiGar’s side, it seems the poor Pliers were the victims of 3G’s improvising strategy this time around, but hopefully they’ll get around to a more permanent solution. If the intro is any indication, it seems that Hyuuma will somehow contribute to this. On a lighter note, it’s ironic that the Zonder attack had the positive side effect of getting Mamoru and his friends to be a little more respectful of school rules after they saw the uninhibited Vice-Principal strongly enforce them.
