GaoGaiGar Ep. 23: Mic 13

0
Summary

Over at NASA headquarters, Liger Shishioh and Stallion White are overseeing the successful testing of a new group of 3G robots made with the G-Stone technology burrowed from Japan. Liger says that he will be heading back to Japan to analyze the data. Mamoru heads out to participate in a remote controlled robot fighting tournament despite the rainy weather and hopes the Zonders don’t show up. Guy and Leo head out in the Amphibious Armored Maintenance Vehicle to meet up with the American submarine USS Orlando which contains the new 3G robot. After the two vessels dock, Leo tells Guy to duck just before the pressure doors open and Liger comes flying through on his rocket powered skateboard. Guy greets his uncle and thanks him for the Pliers before Leo slams Liger with a lariat and the two begin fighting, which is what the brothers do all the time. As they proceed with transferring the crate containing the new robot, a strong storm rocks the docked vessels and knocks the crate out of the crane and into the ocean’s depth. At the tournament, Hana and Reiko wonder what boys like about this hobby as Mamoru defeats Sueo. A cluster of hurricanes starts heading towards the Bay Tower. Taiga welcomes Liger to the Big Order Room. Leo blames Liger for loosing the container and the two start bickering again. Taiga defuses the situation by suggestion they check out the new robot. HyoRyu and EnRyu try to open to recovered container but discover that the lock has been opened. They open the container and to everyone’s shock it’s empty. Back at the tournament, Mamoru goes up against Sunou but before the match can start everyone notices a large robot peering down at them from the top of the stadium. 3G frantically searches G-Island for the missing robot and Liger says that his AI has only been operational for seven weeks so his thought patterns will be those of a child’s. Entouji reports that the intelligence division has spotted the robot near the beach. The hurricanes continue to approach unnoticed and Penchinon gleefully gloats that GaoGaiGar and Mamoru don’t stand a chance against this Zonder.

The children in the stadium continue to stare at the robot with a mixture of fear and confusion. It introduces itself as Mic Sounders 2000 and quickly gets acquainted with Mamoru. Mamoru suddenly senses the Zonder but gets distracted when Mic starts happily dancing and shaking the stadium. 3G notices the hurricanes and dispatches the robots for rescue operations while Guy remains on standby. Volfogg heads towards Mamoru’s location but Penchinon sends one of the hurricanes after him. The storm tears off the roof of the stadium but HyoRyu and EnRyu arrive just in time to hold it down. Mic summons his flying platform Baribarien and docks with it to carry the children away. Guy performs Final Fusion underwater to avoid the effects of the storm. He charges the hurricanes looking for the Zonder but ends up trapped between all of them. Mic unloads all the children safely away from the storm then rushes to help GaoGaiGar, but is comically swatted aside by the storm and thrown into the ocean. Taiga tries to dispatch the 3G robots to help Guy, but no one is available except Goldymarg. Goldymarg is launched into the water along with the Dividing Driver, where he manages to pull GaoGaiGar down from between the hurricanes. Guy uses the Dividing Driver to create a repression field between the hurricanes and expose the star shaped EI-22 flying overhead. Guy dodges EI-22’s attack and fires a Broken Magnum straight through its center before using Hammer Hell and Heaven to finish it off. Penchinon has little time to marvel at the Goldion Hammer’s ability to neutralize winds before he’s knocked off his perch by Volfogg’s Silver Cross and forced to escape. The Zonder victim turns out to be a disgruntled weather girl who was always blamed for making incorrect forecasts. HyoRyu and EnRyu fish Mic out of the water and everyone wonders what good is he while Liger muses to himself that the block on Mic’s abilities is working perfectly since he’s not ready to reveal his powers yet.

Commentary

There’s a lot of foreshadowing in the beginning and end of this episode, but everything in between is kinda slow and dull. Even the poor Zonder in this episode seems to be more of an afterthought than a big threat. If Penchinon knew that Mamoru was trapped in the stadium, why didn’t he have the Zonder attack it directly like he did with Volfogg? Introducing Leo’s outrageously dressed brother Liger and Mic Sounders took center stage here, and like Volfogg’s debut we won’t be getting the full extent of Mic’s abilities right off the bat.
