GaoGaiGar Ep. 4: Escapee Zonder

0
Summary

While Guy is distracted, the Zonder jumps off GaoGaiGar’s hands and escapes through a network of sewer pipes on the edge of the repression field. The electromagnetic interference from its body prevents further tracking. Guy returns to base just as the repression field collapses, and the 3G staff on the field report no negative side effects. A search is conducted to find the Zonder, and Hyuuma takes Mamoru to meet up with Guy. They discuss Mamoru’s powers and Guy’s condition, which Hyuuma attributes to his G-Stone. Suddenly they notice that Mamoru is gone. The latter has wondered off into an abandoned power plant, sensing the Zonder’s presence there. It suddenly materializes from nearby machinery and Mamoru attempts to purify it only to be repelled by an electric shock. The Zonder escapes moments before Guy appears and tries to slash it with his Will Knife. Back at 3G headquarters, the doctor says that Mamoru just got a bump on his head and is otherwise fine. Leo asks where the Zonder escaped to but Mamoru can’t sense him. On the way home, Guy and Mamoru discuss his powers again and Mamoru wonders why he has them. Guy assures him that he won’t tell his parents and gives him a pager so they can contact each other when necessary. A week later, Taiga is informed by his assistant Sakura that the shuttle launch will go as planned. Taiga wonders where the Zonder could be when he spots Isamu. He notices a photo of him with Ai and Mamoru, and asks what his son is like. Isamu says that he’s a playful grade-schooler, and Taiga tells him to always treasure his son. Leo and Hyuuma watch a wrestling match and note that Bomber Death has changed from a dirty fighter into a clean one following his purification. They wonder how he was possessed by the Zonder and where the current one is hiding. Mamoru helps his mother prepare supper, and asks if his father is working a night shift. Ai says that he’s busy preparing for the shuttle launch, and the latter comes in saying he’s grabbing a change of clothes for his all-nighter. At the shuttle launch pad, Pizza lands on a nearby building with the Zonder.

As the crew prepares for the shuttle launch, Pizza tells the Zonder of the wonders of the shuttle and space and how they’re different from the trains he’s used to. Mamoru senses the Zonder in bed and contacts Guy. A search is conducted throughout the shuttle but the Zonder isn’t found. With 40 minutes before launch, Mikoto suggests aborting the operation but Leo says that they can’t do that without finding the Zonder. Hyuuma assumes that Mamoru simply made a mistake. The astronaut boards the shuttle as it’s being fueled. Elsewhere, Mamoru’s class is brought outside to watch the shuttle launch. 15 minutes before launch, the Zonder finally reveals itself inside the cockpit and takes over, launching the shuttle. It tries to strangle the astronaut with its tentacles, but when the helmet shatters it turns out to be Guy. Guy slices the tentacles with his Will Knife and detaches the rocket boosters. As Mamoru’s class looks on, Hana notices the shuttle looking strange, and it finally changes into EI-05. Guy bursts out of the shuttle to find Galeon waiting for him. The fuse into GaiGar and latch onto EI-05 as it barrels towards the ground. Guy severs the fuel line just as EI-05 flies over Mamoru’s school yard, and all the students are left crying in fear save for Mamoru and Ikumi Kaidou. Taiga approves Final Fusion, and Guy lets go of EI-05 to become GaoGaiGar. Guy knocks EI-05 into the ocean with Broken Magnum, and Taiga orders the Dividing Driver to be launched to prevent its escape. Guy creates the repression field as Mamoru hurries to the battle site. EI-05 tries to fire its thrusters at GaoGaiGar but Guy reflects the flames back with Protect Shade. In the ensuing inferno, Guy tears into EI-05 with his fists and Drill Knee. He rips out the core just in time for Mamoru to arrive and purify it. Guy thanks Mamoru and says they need his power. Mamoru replies that his powers must have been given to him to save the people of Earth.

Commentary

You could say that this is the end of the show’s first mini-arc. 3G finally acknowledges their need for Mamoru and the escaped Zonder was finally caught. 3G also notes the emotional changes in the former hosts, which goes towards explaining why they’re gushing tears of happiness after being purified. There’s also the matter of the student who remained rather stone facedly calm after the Zonder fly-by. Even in show populated by characters with big eyes and funky hair styles he tends to stick out so you just know he’ll have a part in the plot eventually. There’s not much to this episode otherwise. While it was cool to see Guy tear the Zonder robo apart, the fight was short and not as exciting as the last one.
