GaoGaiGar Ep. 41: The Distant Song of Victory

Summary

The Zonder metal artificial life form developed by the people of the Trinary Solar system’s Purple Planet was meant be a means to relieve the user’s stress, but the program went haywire and turned on its creator. Countless planets then fell to the Zonderian menace, including the Red and Green Planets. However, two antibodies, Latio and Arma, with the power to resist mechanization were sent to Earth to bide their time until they have the power to destroy the Zonders. Taiga orders the 3G ships to intercept the Primeval ships and to expand the base’s Protect Shades, but Kazou informs him that they can’t charge the shields fast enough with just the backup generator. As the J-Ark approaches the Primevals, Tomoro reminds J that if they don’t rescue Kaidou they can’t accomplish their mission of collecting the Zonder crystals and destroying the Master Program. J performs Fusion and transforms the J-Ark into J-Rider mode. He rushes towards Eye Primeval and destroys her with his Plasma Swords. Mamoru tells 3G that J is trying to rescue Kaidou so Taiga orders everyone to cover the J-Ark. Guy performs Final Fusion and notices Mamoru riding in StealthGao II. Mamoru insists that he’s a 3G member too and Guy agrees to let him fight with them. Liver Primeval restores Eye Primeval and Ear Primeval stops J from making another pass at her. Guy fires his new Broken Phantom attack which smashes right through Ear Primeval’s barrier. J tells Guy not to interfere but Guy reminds him that this is Earth’s battle and tells the Brave Robot Corps to clear a path for the J-Ark. Both sides start to firing upon each other as Susanoo approaches and fires its Reflector Beam. Nail Primeval tries to destroy the F.F. Mirror but it dodges his attack and Volfogg retaliates with another shot. Arm Primeval grabs J and tries to crush him, but J plugs the J-Bird out and rushes towards Liver Primeval, destroying him then remotely firing the J-Quath from the J-Ark into Arm Primeval. J delivers Liver Primeval’s core to Guy, allowing Mamoru to purify it and release its human host. J takes the crystal and says they should finish the battle now that the Primevals lost their ability to regenerate. J fuses into King J-Der and Arm Primeval reminds him that they still have Kaidou trapped inside the Belleau Wood. The Primevals then all fuse into one giant monster on the surface of the moon.

The Primeval Fusion fires a massive gravity shockwave at everyone and the Orbit Base’s Protect Shade is barely able to withstand it. The blast barely misses the surface of the Earth and the Primeval Fusion comments that it’d be a waste to kill the Earthlings when they can Zonderize them. Mikoto contacts Guy and informs him that they’re going to fire a Solitary Wave Riser. The Mic force transforms and fires, but the Primeval Fusion uses its combined powers to block the blast much to everyone’s disbelief. J attacks the Primeval Fusion head on but all his projectiles are repelled. The Primeval Fusion grabs J and Guy fires a Broken Phantom at it but gets knocked away. GaoGaiGar‘s power plant is damaged and the rest of the Brave Robot Corps are unable to assist. The Primeval Fusion tells Guy to wait while it destroys J. Guy sees the young woman again and her multiple expressions all merge into one. Getting an idea, Guy asks Taiga to quickly launch the Gatling Driver and tells the Mic Force to fire another Solitary Wave. The Mic Force complains that they’ll be destroyed if they try to fire again but Mic tells them to show some guts. The Mic Force fires again and Guy uses the Gatling Drive to create a gravity lens that focuses the blast into a thin beam. The beam hits the Primeval Fusion’s barrier and it mockingly tells them that it can absorb the beam with its black hole. However Kaidou who is still trapped inside blocks Intestine Primeval’s power and J uses the distraction to fire the J-Quath which rips straight into the Primeval Fusion’s arm. This weakens the barrier and allows the Solitary Wave beam to pierce through the Primeval Fusion. J then finishes it off by penetrating its other arm and firing off all his cannons inside. A massive explosion occurs, after which Guy spots the J-Ark leaving and Mamoru wonders if Kaidou is ok. On the J-Ark, Kaidou purifies the retrieved Primeval cores and discovers that Arm and Intestine Primeval have escaped.

Commentary

After a fierce space battle, the Magnificent Seven are finally defeated. It’s nice that 3G hasn’t lost their ability to improvise battle strategies on the spot. Unfortunately, Arm and Intestine Primeval will still manage to elude them for the next few episodes. It seems Sunrise finally realized the glaring lack of an explanation for where Mamoru’s pendant came from, so they snuck in a quick scene showing Isamu finding it on the ground right after Galeon delivered Mamoru to them. Overall though, this is my least favorite arc in the series. For starters, the Chinese dragons badly needed a sense of individuality after their introduction and this arc was a golden opportunity for that which was sadly missed. The other reason is that the Magnificent Seven were too much like a villain group out of a Shonen Jump anime and looked out of place in this show.
