GaoGaiGar Ep. 44: Prelude to the End

0
Summary

Entouji, Kazou and Swan go over some data for previous missions to Jupiter. The unmanned probe Jupiros-1 carried an energy booster called Jupiter-X, which was destroyed in an explosion. Every probe afterwards suffered the same fate. Taiga and Leo oversee the repairs of HyoRyu and EnRyu, who have gone back to normal after releasing all THE POWER that was in them. Taiga wonders what the mystery behind Jupiter is. At a television studio, a producer is putting the finishing edits on a new episode of his show GaGaGatchi and dreams of getting one hundred percent TV ratings. Suddenly Arm Primeval appears from one of the screens and says he’ll grant his wish before attaching a Zonder metal crystal to him. At school, Sueo and Sunou pretend they’re characters from GaGaGatchi and mock fight with brooms. Hana confronts Mamoru about what she saw and asks if he’s an alien. Mamoru is too shocked to answer and scares Hana away when drops the waste basket in his hands. At home, Isamu plans a trip to a hot spring resort for the family and Ai wonders if this will affect his job. Isamu tells her that if they just worry about work their children will grow up without them noticing. The Zonder takes over the television studio building and begins broadcasting a signal. The next day, GaGaGatchi is being broadcast all over the world on every channel. 3G wonders why anyone would be doing this and Entouji notes that Mamoru hasn’t contacted them. Mamoru is having fun with his parents at the hot spring resort and doesn’t detect the Zonder, but he’s still thinking about what Hana said. Elsewhere, Arm Primeval and Pagliaccio had managed to gather all the remaining Primeval cores and leave Earth through an ES Window. The J-Ark approaches the window and Kaidou realizes that they used the Zonder to mess up the broadcasting signals and cover their escape. J has the J-Ark fly through the window to chase after the Primevals. Ayame drags Hana with her to the television station so she can complain about the broadcasts, but they find that the Zonder has fused with the building and imprisoned the staff. They try to escape but Hana gets caught by the Zonder’s tentacles. Ayame manages to get out and quickly calls 3G.

3G tries to contact Mamoru but his pager is left with his clothes. Izanagi quickly launches and shoots out GaiGar and the dragons. Volfogg tries to relay the situation but his transmission gets jammed. The dragons destroy the broadcasting towers, allowing Mamoru to finally sense the Zonder. 3G detects Z0 particles and realize they’re not facing a Primeval as EI-74 bursts out of the television station and reveals the hostages attached to its body. Entouji reports that the Zonder was broadcasting a special jamming frequency within the television broadcast to interfere with 3G’s sensors, and Taiga orders the Brave Robot Corps to take it out. The dragons combine into ChoRyuJin and GekiRyuJin and dodge EI-74’s machine gun barrage. ChoRyuJin pins down the Zonder with his tonfa while GekiRyuJin cuts out the hostages with Xiang Tou Long. Volfogg grabs the hostages as Mic approaches to use Disc X. However EI-74 regenerates and fires jamming waves at everyone, disabling them all except Guy. The transmission blocks all other signals and 3G is unable to monitor the battle or initiate Final Fusion. Guy knocks EI-74 down but gets quickly overwhelmed when he realizes it still has Hana as a hostage. Mamoru hurries to assist Guy and runs into his parents. Isamu understands that it’s something Mamoru must do and the latter confesses that he knows he’s not their son. Ai hugs Mamoru and tells him that he is without a doubt their child even if they’re not related by blood. Isamu says that he gave Mamoru his name because it means ‘to protect’ and hopes that he will protect the people of this planet. The battle reaches the front door of the resort, and Mamoru quickly flies out and uses his powers to push EI-74 back. The unconscious Hana wakes up and panics when she realizes what’s going on. Mamoru hesitates no longer and disable’s EI-74’s jamming, allowing Guy to perform Final Fusion. Mamoru frees Hana and flies away as Guy uses Hammer Hell and Heaven to take out EI-74. They land on GaoGaiGar’s hand so Mamoru can purify the core. Mamoru admits to Hana that he’s an alien and the latter asks him where the real Mamoru is. Mamoru says that he is the real Mamoru and Hana is relieved because she thought he was an imposter that took the real Mamoru’s place, but now she knows that he’s been protecting them all along. Kazou reports that all broadcasts have returned to normal but suddenly they detect an ES Window opening in front of the Orbit Base. The window spits out the J-Ark with an unconscious Kaidou and a missing J and J-Der.

Commentary

This is a nice throwback episode harkening to the older days of Zonder busting from the first season. It provides some much needed closure between Mamoru, his parents and Hana, and sets up the start of the show’s final arc. There’s also a couple of visual gags and Easter eggs like the show within a show GaGaGatchi and Ayame’s Ultraman-style phone. Like the Machine Kings before them, the Primevals used a Zonder to provide a distraction while they stepped up their major plan, and given the state of the J-Ark it seems poor J didn’t fare too well against their combined might.
