King Gainer Ep. 9: Miss Adette’s Hard Lesson

0
Summary

Bello and Gainer arrive at class, finding Adette throwing someone out and eating the student’s bread rations. The students yell at Adette about how she shouldn’t be their teacher and should stop eating their food. Adette tells her students to show up at the city unit farm that night at midnight, along with King Gainer. That night King Gainer arrives and Adette gets into its cockpit with Gainer. Bello and Sara show up soon after on a Panther silhouette engine. Some of the other students are in another silhouette engine nearby. Mamado and Gain discuss it on the Bachclone and Gain decides to head out to check on them. Everyone heads further off, singing about the ocean. Adette complains about not being able to use her cell phone. She says they’ll soon pass a railway track where the cargo trains usually pass. Bello asks Sara if they should trust Adette and Sara says this is a chance to see what she’s up to. Adette has the King Gainer fire at the front of the tracks. She then jumps out of the King Gainer and says she’ll leave it up to Gainer and his friends. Bello and Adette head into the accompanying silhouette engine and heads towards the track. Dogodzos get out of the train cars and start attacking King Gainer and Sara’s Panther. Sara thinks that Gainer is missing the Dogodzos on purpose and tells Gainer to adjust his aim. He immediately hits one after doing so. Adette and Bello’s silhouette engine start tearing one of the train cars off and Adette tells her students to look inside. Bello heads in and finds food inside while his fellow students tie up the crew members. The Siberian Railway forces launch an attack on them. King Gainer fights with another Dogodzo and chops it in half. The damaged Dogodzo runs away and Sara tells Gainer to focus on their friends by the tracks. Sara tells Gainer she’s impressed at his ability to defeat the Dogodzos without killing anyone. She asks why he still has difficulty with getting along with people and Sara says they are similar. They arrive at the train cars and Adette tells Gainer to grab some more train cars. Bello tells them that there are two more train cars with food. Three Overmen piloted by Kejinan, Enge and Jaboli head towards the train car to investigate what is going on. Kejinan and Enge complain and Jaboli yells at them. They arrive at the remains of the train, finding all the food gone. The conductor yells at them, saying that the enemy took the food since they were late in arriving. He describes the King Gainer to them. Meanwhile, Gainer and the others provide some food to people they found on the way back to the Yapan Exodus. The people there claim to be heading to Yapan as well. Adette says they don’t have to feel guilty about taking the Siberian Railway’s food since they charge so much for it. Bello and the other students work on sorting the remaining food. Gainer apologizes for not helping and Bello says it is okay and he can continue to do is part in protecting them. The three Siberian Railway Overmen approach and fire at King Gainer. Jaboli wonders what to do now that she’s in an actual battle. The Overmen surround the King Gainer but it jumps at him. Jaboli extends her Overman’s arms to grab King Gainer and fling it into the ground.

The Overmen continue to shoot at King Gainer, whose photon ring is not as effective against bullets due to its large size. Jaboli tells the others that they will capture the King Gainer. The Overman attack the King Gainer with their extended arms. One of the students is injured and almost falls off the train car. Suddenly the train car stops and Adette heads off. Bello wonders if she is returning to the Siberian Railway but she says she can’t return to them after stealing from them. Sara calls the Overmen bullies and attacks them with her Panther. Kejinan’s Overman is able to knock her over and King Gainer lifts the Panther back up. King Gainer defends against another attack. Jaboli orders all three overman to attack at once and they all extend their arms towards the King Gainer. Luckily for King Gainer, doing so causes all of their arms to get tangled up with each other. The hands of the Overmen are able to detach from their arms however and still attack the King Gainer. Adette approaches and tells Gainer to watch the Overman’s actions. This enables King Gainer to hit Enge’s Overman. Kejinan, Enge and Jaboli realize that Adette is alive and helping the King Gainer. King Gainer hits Enge’s Overman in the leg. Sara realizes that Adette can predict their habits since they used to be underlings of hers. Jaboli’s attack misses King Gainer but hits the train car carrying the food. Bello’s fellow students tell him they’re scared but he is confident in Gainer and Sara. Kejinan’s Overman is knocked to the ground and King Gainer is able to grab the arm of Jaboli’s Overman, pulling her towards him. Jaboli’s defeated Overman falls to the ground. Adette tells Gainer that he’s worthy of being her student. Kejinan grabs a hold of Adette and Sara tells him to let go of their teacher. Kejinan laughs upon hearing that Adette is now a teacher. Sara knocks Kejinan out of his Overman. Adette says she won’t return to the Siberian Railway without a strong man. Kejinan yells at Adette and his hat is shot off by Gain, who is just arriving, saying he’s not needed anymore. King Gainer picks up Kejinan’s shot up hat and wonders if it was just a fluke. Sara and Gainer talk about Gain and if he truly is Black Southern Cross. The students thank King Gainer for helping them. Gain tells Gainer he is doing some growing up. Back in the city unit, Bello joins Gainer in his room and provides him some stolen food. Gainer and Bello says they’ll be late to school the next day and scolded by Mamado. They find Adette below, asking where the shower is. She says she’ll be providing special training to the student with tremendous promise. Gainer frightfully asks Bello to not leave her alone with him. Adette sings about the ocean in the shower.

Commentary

I’d consider this the weakest episode yet. The plot still isn’t really going anywhere, and aside from some very brief scenes at the beginning and end, the entire episode is taken up with our heroes capturing the food from the Siberian Railway. Adette’s involvement brought an interesting dynamic, particularly when she interacted with her former underlings. Still, in a show whose plot has been moving fairly slowly, to have another episode like this seems like a bit of a waste. The additional development for Adette could have been intermingled with other events rather than having their extracurricular activities taking up an entire episode.
