Mospeada Ep. 17: White Night Serenade

0
Summary

Ray wonders what’s up with the weather as the group travels on a snow-capped mountain. Elsewhere, Solzie thinks about her encounter with Yellow and flies off in her Gosu. She meets up with several Grabs, which report on the group’s position. The group sits around a campfire, and Jim wishes he had a steak to eat. Houquet comments that Jim is complaining even though he eats a lot. Aisha begins to have a headache, which puts everyone on guard against an Inbit attack. Nothing happens, and Houquet says she thinks it must’ve been Aisha’s imagination. Yellow begins to sing to Aisha to calm her down, and Ray comments to Stick that they look good together, but Stick says it’s none of his business. The Grabs emerge from the snow and surround the camp. Solzie spots Yellow and trips while attempting to stop a Grab from attacking. A Grab knocks Ray aside and stops him from getting into a Legioss. Another Grab knocks Stick aside, and everyone is forced to run away from the camp. They begin sliding down the side of the mountain, and Solzie gives chase in her Gosu. Stick can see her through the cockpit, and she opens fire on him. Jim shoots at the Gosu, and Yellow pushes him aside before she can kill Jim. She pauses when she sees Yellow and pulls back. The Grabs continue the attack, and Solzie wonders why she couldn’t shoot Yellow and Jim. Aisha cries and asks why everyone must hurt and kill each other. The Grabs stop firing as an avalanche begins. Aisha trips while trying to run away, but Yellow grabs her. A Grab is destroyed, and the Legiosses are buried under the tidal wave of snow. The remaining Grabs begin searching the area, and Ray heads to a forest with Houquet and Mint. A Grab spots their footprints in the snow and begins searching the area.

Ray cuts down a tree and begins rigging a simple trap for the approaching Grab. He tells Houquet and Mint to hide inside the igloo while he takes on the Grab. The Grab continues to follow the track of footprints as Ray watches from atop a tree. The Grab then hits a trip wire, which causes it to be turned upside down after being caught in a sling. Its weight proves to be too much for the trees, and it gets off a shot that knocks Ray out of his tree. Houquet begins shooting at the Grab and is knocked away by one of its shots. Mint starts throwing snowballs at the Grab and draws its attention. Ray gets up and opens fire on the Grab so that everyone can escape. The Grab then falls into a pit, and Houquet and Mint cut wires that cause a sharpened log to smash into its eye sensor. Mint is glad they made two traps, and Ray wonders if the others are safe. Stick runs through a canyon as bait while Jim tries to drop a boulder on the Grabs from above. The boulder crashes into several other boulders and sets off an avalanche that destroys the Grabs. Elsewhere, Yellow and Aisha are chased by a Grab and reach a cliff. They try to jump to the other side and find Solzie waiting for them. Yellow accidentally drops his gun and asks Solzie why she’s working for the Inbit. Solzie wonders why she cares for a human and pulls out a gun. Yellow asks Solzie to spare Aisha, and Solzie has a reaction when she spots Aisha. The two have a vision of being life energies flying through space. Solzie comes under fire from Stick and the others and is forced to get back into the Gosu to fall back. She and the Grab open fire, but the blasts from Stick and the others cause the ground to crumble underneath them, sending them falling down into a river. Ray jokes that his plans never fail, and Stick points out that the landslide was a coincidence. Ray wonders why the Gosu didn’t shoot Yellow and Aisha immediately, and Stick answers that the Inbit are alien monsters from another planet, so there’s no way to know how they think. Everyone begins to dig out the Legiosses before the Inbit return. Afterward, Solzie watches them from a distance.

Commentary

The group again finds themselves in a cold environment and on the run from the Inbit. We’ve seen this sort of story before in the series – the Inbit attack and the group doesn’t have its mecha, so they have to survive on their own. Ray comes up with some good traps, but he should’ve known that something as heavy as a Grab would outweigh a couple of trees. Solzie again has pause when it comes to Yellow and finds that she can’t kill him. He doesn’t know that she’s an Inbit and assumes that she’s a regular human who is working for the Inbit. There’s a very clear reaction when Aisha and Solzie spot each other, and Yellow catches that something is going on. Otherwise, it’s a pretty unremarkable episode.
