Rayearth Ep. 16: A Powerful Foe! Lafarga the Swordmaster

0
Summary

In her prison, Emeraude begs the Knights to hurry before it’s too late. Zagato appears and she pleads for him to stop but he says no matter how many people die his heart won’t change. He tells her that only one Rune-God remains and Lafarga joins him. Zagato asks if the Magic Knights can win against Lafarga, the best swordsman on Cephiro. Zagato has a spell in place that controls Lafarga and Emeraude’s pleas don’t reach him. The Knights continue their journey, with Hikaru excited to revive her Rune-God. They come across a monster that attacks them. During the battle Umi drops her sword and the monster flies off with her. Fuu tries to pick up Umi’s sword but it turns into water and slips out of her hands. She throws her own sword to Umi instead, but it’s too heavy for Umi to hold. Lafarga appears in the monster’s path and destroys it. Umi falls but the others catch her. Umi comments on the weight of Fuu’s sword, but to Fuu the sword is light. They conclude that their swords are specifically for them and no one else. They remember about Lafarga and he approaches them.

The girls thank him, but he attacks them. He introduces himself and says his mission is to destroy them. He only saved Umi because if the monster killed them, he couldn’t fulfil his mission. Lafarga completely overpowers them with slashes that split the earth. Umi and Fuu are trapped by some rocks and Hikaru is wounded protecting them. Umi tells Hikaru to use her magic, but Hikaru refuses because Lafarga is only using his sword. Hikaru says they’ll save Emeraude, which causes the spell on Lafarga to weaken. Lafarga remembers when Emeraude was taken away by Zagato and Hikaru manages to knock his sword away. He punches her away and then grabs her by the throat as he recalls his battle against Zagato. Lafarga takes Hikaru sword and it sets him on fire. The flames go out once he drops the sword and he returns to his senses. He asks about Emeraude and notices Hikaru’s wounds. She says not to worry about it since he was probably being control by Zagato. After freeing Umi and Fuu, they see Lafarga off. He’s surprised to learn they’re the Magic Knights and thanks them for breaking the spell. He leaves and the Knights continue their journey.

Commentary

You know, sometimes I wonder if Umi and Fuu are only around to make Hikaru look better. Once again they’re helpless and Hikaru gets hurt protecting them. Lafarga totally outclassed them and really they only made it out alive due to anti-theft measures. Though I have to wonder why Hikaru mentioning Emeraude weakened the spell while Emeraude being right in front of him did nothing. Maybe the spell is stronger in Zagato’s presence? It probably would have been a good idea to send Lafarga after the girls when they first arrived but then we wouldn’t have a show. Now the girls have a powerful ally… Who leaves immediately. I imagine he would have come in handy when they walk into Zagato’s next trap.
