Rayearth Ep. 17: The Truth About Inouva and the Return of Memories

0
Summary

As the girls run along, they notice that the sky doesn’t get sunny anymore. They get a call from Clef who says it will be the last time he can contact them. He tells them to hurry because they won’t be able to return home if Cephiro collapses. He’s about to tell them who their true enemy is but the call ends. Inouva laments his previous defeat and asks Zagato to let him try again. He begs Zagato to revert him to his original form, but Zagato ignores him. Inouva says he knows Zagato keeps him close because he was a gift from Emeraude. Inouva explains that he asked to be turned into his current form so he could wield a sword, but now he needs his full power to defeat the Magic Knights. Zagato tells him he won’t be able to return to human form, and asks why he’s so devoted to him. Inouva says he knows Zagato’s feelings well and even if it’s deemed evil, Zagato’s wish means the world to him. Zagato finally agrees and turns Inouva back into his bestial form. The girls are attacked by lightning and Inouva appears before them.

Inouva turns into lightning and attacks, while nearby Ferio watches the skies. He thinks back to his meeting with Emeraude, but sees himself when he was younger. He wonders how Emeraude knew his name. Inouva speaks to the girls directly in their minds and reveals his identity. He attacks them again and Fuu calls out to Ferio. Ferio’s memories come back to him and he realizes he’s Emeraude’s younger brother. He had asked Emeraude to erase his memories so he wouldn’t interfere with her pillar duties. He had actually received the orbs at that time. Umi attacks Inouva with her water dragon, but it’s ineffective. Emeraude contacts Ferio and explains his memories came back because her powers have weakened. She tells him that Magic Knights are in danger so he runs off to help them. Inouva prepares to finish them off, but Ferio contacts them. He tells them Inouva’s weakness is the gem on his forehead. Hikaru charges in and manages to deflect Inouva’s attack back at him, which gives her an opening to finish him off. Hikaru wakes up to see Ferio has joined them. He explains that Emeraude told him Inouva’s weakness and gives them his orb. He explains that Emeraude can only communicate with them through the orbs so they should have them. He beseeches them to save Emeraude and Cephiro. Alcyone appears to Zagato and asks for another chance but he just walks away

Commentary

Even I can only take so much of a formula before it gets old. Once again a powerful foe is defeated easily by Hikaru while Umi and Fuu do nothing. We learn that Ferio is Emeraude’s brother, but this reveal doesn’t really relate to the rest of the episode. It allows him to learn Inouva’s weakness but it would have been better if the girls figured that out for themselves. Inouva shows the depths of his loyalty to Zagato, and interestingly Zagato shows he genuinely cares about Inouva in return. Perhaps he’s not so evil after all.
