Rayearth Ep. 4: Alcyone, the Vengeful Sorceress

0
Summary

Mokona continues to lead the girls on their journey, but its fast pace leaves them exhausted. Knowing they’re out of the Forest of Silence, Umi tries to use magic to fly them to the spring, but nothing happens. Hikaru reminds her that she needs Clef to show her how to use magic and says that they’ll be fine because Hikaru can use magic. Mokona runs back scared and the girls get ready to face a monster, but a shadowy vortex swallows Umi and Fuu. Hikaru stabs it before it can get her too and finishes it off with a Flame Arrow. Umi and Fuu are released and they decide to hurry to the spring to avoid more monsters. They arrive at what looks to be a deserted town, but they get caught in a net. The villagers emerge and surround the girls, but a monster shows up and scares them away. Hikaru tries to use her magic, but her legs fall through the net, so she kicks the monster instead. The monster attacks them and frees them from the net. Hikaru is still tangled in a rope, so Umi draws her weapon and kills the monster. Alcyone looks over the village.

Hikaru tries to tell the villagers it’s okay now, but they remain in their houses. Umi says they should move on but is suddenly attacked. Alcyone shows herself and Hikaru leaves the injured Umi in Fuu’s care. Alcyone wonders if Hikaru can win against her since she’s the princess’ sorceress and a pupil of Clef. Hikaru asks why Alcyone is against them and she answers it’s because she loves Zagato. Alcyone attacks but Hikaru dodges everything. Alcyone’s taunts anger Hikaru and she launches a Flame Arrow that gets through Alcyone’s defences. Fuu realizes that Hikaru’s will has powered up her magic. Umi wakes up and tries to join the fight, but she’s too weak. Umi wishes she could use magic so she can help and the jewel on Mokona’s forehead lights up. Umi hears Clef’s voice and he shows her how to use magic. Alcyone is about to finish off Hikaru, but Umi attacks with her Water Dragon spell and defeats her. Umi collapses again and Fuu asks Mokona to help her as well. Clef shows Fuu how to use magic and she uses the Winds of Healing spell to restore Umi. The girls celebrate and reaffirm their bond. A little girl tries to give them a flower, but her mother takes her away. Hikaru wonders if they’re still seen the same as the monsters, but Umi assures her that’s not the case for that girl. They continue on their way to Eterna.

Commentary

Until now Umi and Fuu haven’t really been pulling their weight so it was up to Hikaru to do everything. Hopefully that’s to change since all three of them can use magic now. Despite being in the title, Alcyone is only in half the episode and we don’t learn much about her other than that she’s in love with Zagato. And despite supposedly being a powerful sorceress, once again she’s beaten in one shot. Come to think of it, that’s true for most monsters so far. While the magical combat in the episode is pretty neat, the rest of the time could have been used on more relevant things.
