Rayearth Ep. 40: The Magic Knights and the Calm After the Storm

0
Summary

A disembodied Hikaru finds herself floating around a garden where she sees Lantis up in a tree. Zagato appears and Hikaru realizes she’s seeing Cephiro’s past. Hikaru spots Emeraude as Zagato asks Lantis what he thinks about the Pillar System. Emeraude runs off crying and Zagato admits that he’s committed the greatest sin. He says he can’t stop loving Emeraude even if he dies or the world falls to ruin. Lantis says the world is beautiful but thinks it would be truly beautiful if flowers bloomed without a Pillar. Hikaru wakes up and tells Umi and Fuu she dreamt of Cephiro’s past. She asks about Eagle and Fuu says they have a cease fire with Autozam. Umi adds that they have Eagle in the castle. Geo returns to the NSX and laments that he can’t do anything. Lantis visits Eagle in his cell. Debonair curses Emeraude but says that was the last of the power in the crown. She says the people’s fear will worsen after the monster attack and Nova comes in upset that Hikaru won’t play with her. Debonair says Nova only lost because of Presea and that she should go get Lantis if she wants him. Debonair also tells her to make the people even more fearful because she’s powered by negative emotions.

The Knights visit the residential area where they find children playing. Mira greets them and Hikaru thanks her for the flower crown. The other children gather around them as well. Lantis walks through the magic barrier detaining Eagle and takes a hidden weapon from him. Fuu sings for the kids and Mira comments that Emeraude was a good singer too. The kids wonder if a new Pillar will get rid of the monsters and Mira tells them what Lantis said about flowers still blooming. Water surrounds Emeraude’s crown as it starts to glow. Eagle says he heard a girl’s voice and figures it was Emeraude. The crown starts changing shape. Lantis explains Eagle heard a remnant of the princess’s heart left in the crown. Lantis reminds him that he left Cephiro to end the tragedy of the Pillar. He asks Eagle if he’ll still get the system even if it makes his loved ones sad, but Eagle says he doesn’t think it will be too painful. The crown completely changes shape. A portal appears in front of the Knights and Nova exits. She attacks but Fuu and Hikaru deflect her attacks. Nova says that she is Hikaru and thus knows everything that goes on with her. She pulls off Hikaru’s ribbon, revealing the pendant Lantis had given her. Nova says Hikaru is in love with Lantis and vows to kill him in the worst way possible before disappearing.

Commentary

After all that happened previously this was a needed breather episode but it still moved the plot along. Emeraude’s crown has changed shape, which means there’s finally a candidate worthy of being the Pillar. It’s heavily suggested that that person is either Hikaru or Eagle, which is sure to make the latter happy. The flower thing really hammers in the notion that it’d be better if they didn’t need a Pillar but with Cephiro on the brink of collapse there really isn’t much of a choice. To make things worse, Nova is back on the scene and I sure wouldn’t want to be Lantis right about now.
