Rayearth Ep. 6: Lives at Stake – Presea’s Weapons

0
Summary

An earthquake occurs during the Magic Knight’s return trip to Presea’s place and Mokona uses the chance to spook Umi. Mokona then projects an image of Clef, who explains the earthquakes are a sign of Cephiro falling apart. He warns them if it happens they can’t return home and tells them one of Zagato’s minions is waiting for them in the Forest of Silence. Presea feels another earthquake and recalls her first meeting with Clef. Clef told her of the Magic Knights and took her to the Forest of Silence to protect her from Zagato. Ascot watches Presea’s place from afar and summons a monster. He instructs it to chase after a red orb that he throws into Presea. Presea thinks about the Magic Knights only to see that they’ve returned. She takes them to her forge, which is just an empty room, and has them take out the escudo. She performs a dance to create the weapons, but the cry of the monster interrupts her. Hikaru, Umi, and Fuu go off to investigate while Presea stays behind. The girls’ go outside and encounter the monster.

The girls attack the monster but it just regenerates. They try again but it has no effect. Fuu concludes the monster builds a resistance to previous attacks. They try different spells but the monster not only regenerates, but evolves as well. They try their weapons but the monster knocks them away. Ascot watches on but decides to take a nap instead. When it looks like the monster is going to finish Hikaru off, it instead ignores her and goes inside the building. They realize it’s going after Presea and give chase, but their weapons suddenly vanish. Presea finishes just as the monster crashes in and buries her in rubble. Hikaru attacks the monster which makes it evolve into a moth like creature. The escudo weapons appear before the Magic Knights and they use them to kill the monster. They go to Presea’s side but she dies moments later. Ascot looks for his monster but Inouva appears and informs Ascot that it’s dead. Ascot confirms it and vows to avenge its death. Hikaru, Umi and Fuu make a grave for Presea and promise to save Cephiro.

Commentary

I kind of have to scratch my head at this episode. Why exactly did they feel the need to kill off Presea? She lives in the manga and her death creates a hole in the second season (but we’ll get to that). I guess they wanted to raise the stakes a little? To inject some drama? It’s pretty unnecessary if you ask me. At any rate Presea does her job and creates the Knights’ weapons for them but I actually prefer their borrowed weapons. Those suited each girl’s personality but now all three of them have swords. I just find it a tad boring. This episode also establishes Ascot who is very much a child and very attached to his monsters. He’s sure to cause more trouble in the future.
