SRW OG: The Inspector Stage 18: The Inviting Fires of Demons

Summary

Mekibos’ shot misses and the Hagane uses the recoil from the Tronium Buster Cannon to fly out of the area. The Hiryu Kai performs an over boost and leaves the area as well. After getting away, Tetsuya asks Daitetsu for orders, but he discovers that Daitetsu has died. Excellen asked why Alfimi took her and realizes the Einst appeared at Langley to save Kyosuke. Excellen asks what Alfimi wants, and Alfimi replies that there’s no need to explain since Excellen will become a pure being. Alfimi kisses her, and the Weissritter begins to mutate. On the Ganland, Mekibos is told that Langley is now overrun with Einst. Mekibos tells Vindel that the Inspectors are ready to take in the Shadow Mirrors, but notes that they’re still keeping things from each other. He brings up Wodan attacking Vigagi but Lemon explains that Wodan is obsessed with defeating his original. He was based off a strong willed man, so they stabilized him using Magus. Axel suggests leaving Wodan at the Earth Cradle, and Lemon believes that’s best. Mekibos says the fewer of them to deal with the better, and reminds them to bring System XN to Neviim before he leaves. Lemon notes it’s hard to believe Mekibos is from another planet since they could easily talk to him. Vindel says they’ll go to Neviim when they can, but adds that the Einst worry him. Lemon points out that it seems they protected Kyosuke and Axel hopes letting him go doesn’t come back to haunt them. Lamia, Kusuha and Bullet watch over the injured Kyosuke. Bullet tells Kusuha that Kyosuke will pull through, and Kusuha cries over the loss of Excellen and Daitetsu. Lamia experiences sorrow and wonders if Lemon really wants a world where that feeling becomes normal. Tetsuya blames himself for Daitetsu’s death, but Sean notes that bullets strike everyone equally, even captains. He goes on to say they can’t lose themselves in sorrow and affect morale, Lefina adding that they have to survive so the deaths of others aren’t in vain. In his coma, Kyosuke hears a voice telling him to devour his enemies and that his battle isn’t over. On the deck of the Hagane, everyone salutes the fallen. Elzam drops his Ratsel guise and says that if it wasn’t for Daitetsu they wouldn’t have gotten so far. Tetsuya resolves to carry on Daitetsu’s will and asks him to watch over them. Sean throws a bottle of scotch into the water and laments being unable to drink with Daitetsu again. A heavily injured Kyosuke drags himself outside and salutes as well.

Yuuki thanks everyone for taking his team onboard and Lefina asks him about the Earth Cradle. He says that there have been no new orders but adds that Egret, Sophia Nate and Archibald are now in charge. Ratsel makes his acquaintance with Archibald known, and also suggests that Egret was the one who opened the Earth Cradle up to the Neo DC. Sanger thinks back to the end of the last war where Sophia decided to make the Earth Cradle dormant. Viletta thinks Egret, Archibald and Agilla will try something and Gilliam adds they will probably join Vindel. Viletta says the Inspectors will need a new base on Earth and Ratsel suggests going to the Earth Cradle since the Neo DC is in chaos. Lefina offers to go as well, saying they might need to take it over. Tetsuya says the Hagane is in no condition to go, and Ratsel says he’ll do something. Lefina asks Yuuki and Carla to help out, but Carla points out that they fought each other many times. Kai says they just need to overcome that barrier. Yuuki agrees but on a condition. Afterwards, Yuuki tells Carla to get off the ship since she wasn’t part of DC and her revenge is over. Carla says she wasn’t fighting for revenge but so no one else would suffer. She adds she doesn’t want to say good bye to him, and he relents. Yuuki and Carla tell Tasuku, Leona, Ryoto, Rio and Arado that they’ll be working together. Ryoto and Leona point out that they used to fight for the DC as well, and Tasuku adds that Arado is there too. Arado asks about Seolla, but Yuuki says he hasn’t seen her since she was removed from his squad but he thinks she’s at the Earth Cradle. Arado says he’ll save Seolla and Carla voices her support. Yuuki asks about Bullet and is told he went to see Kyosuke. Kyosuke is told about Excellen and the damaged Alteisen, but he says the Alteisen can be repaired. He gets out of bed and says he’ll either save or avenge Excellen. Lamia holds him back but Kyosuke doesn’t back down. Lamia notes how fast he’s recovering. While on patrol, Masaki comes across the Kurogane as it meets up with the Hagane. Onboard the Kurogane is Shu Shirakawa, much to Masaki’s displeasure. Shu says it’s no time for them to fight because the world is in chaos. Graien is informed of military facilities, including Neo DC bases and Neviim, being attacked by Einst. At Neviim, Vigagi and Mekibos fight off the Einst when Axel shows up in the repaired Soulgain along with the other Shadow Mirrors. Vigagi and Mekibos pull back while Axel charges at the Einst. Ratsel wonders if the Einsts’ attacks are related to what happened at Langley and Shu says it’s good for them. Eun reports of a distress call from Winnipeg base and Lefina says the Hiryu Kai will go. Masaki warns Shu not to try anything but Shu doesn’t plan to do so. The Einst attack the city, but the Chokijin appear to attack them. Bullet senses their arrival.

Commentary

The Hagane manages to escape Langley, but not without paying a terrible price. With Super Robot Wars, protagonists just don’t die because then the player would lose a unit they worked hard to level up, so almost all deaths are on the antagonist side. As such, when Daitetsu got killed it was a pretty big thing. I guess that’s what he gets for talking about retirement a few episodes ago. I have issues with how his death was portrayed here, though, but I’ll just say that the game handled it much better. The crew give him a proper send off and even Kyosuke, as injured as he is, shows up to pay his respects. Not all is right with that man, though, as he’s hearing voices and Lamia notes his fast recovery speed. Shu puts in an appearance in this episode, much to my delight, and he’s actually helping out our heroes. For now, at least. Alfimi recruits Excellen to play for the other team (in more ways than one?) and the Einst go on an all out offensive. The Shadow Mirrors and Inspectors hole up at Neviim while the Neo DC hangs out at the Earth Cradle, giving our heroes two nice shiny targets to go after. They’ll have to wait, though, as the Hiryu Kai is off to save a city. The Chokijin finally reappear as well to take on the Einst. You’re 16 episodes late to the party, guys.
