SRW OG: The Inspector Stage 8: Servants of the Dark Bird

0
Summary

Axel watches his Soulgain undergo repairs and he tells Lemon that even if he wants a world where conflict is a part of daily life, a monster like Beowulf would upset that balance. Lemon reminds him that the Kyosuke on this side isn’t the same Beowulf Axel knows. Axel says if things turn out the same, he’ll defeat him. An hour before the attack on Riksent, Tasuku Shinguji, Leona Garstein, Katina Tarask, and Russel Bergman do combat exercises near the Moon. Sean Webley and Eun Hyojin monitor them from the battleship Hiryu Kai. Katina sends Russel and Leona to take on some drones, and asks Tasuku how his Giganscudo Duro is doing. Leona senses something and the Hiryu Kai detects a jump out at the L5 area near Neviim. Eun says they’ve lost contact with the fleet stationed there and Sean decides to call the captain to the bridge. Inside Neviim, a team of scientists feel a rumble while they unlock a large door. They marvel at what they find, but the forces outside come under attack. The beam from space hits near Langley and Kenneth tries to get a message out, but all communications are down. Many Rest Djemila units warp out above the base and attack it, easily crushing its defenses. Kenneth tells Lee he’s transferring to the Shirogane and to prepare to launch. Lee says that’s desertion, but Kenneth insists that they have to escape and plan a counter offensive. At Aviano Base, Gilliam, Excellen and Kyosuke report to Kai about what happened in Riksent. Kai says he’ll request an operation to liberate Riksent, and Gilliam says the communication outages worry him. At Mao Industries on the Moon, the facility is surrounded by Rest Djemilas and the Graterkin. Ring Mao, Rio Meilong and her father Yuan receive a message telling them to hand over the Huckebein. Ring tells Ryoto and Radha Byraban to launch the Tausendfuessler along with the new units that are already ready. Radha says they haven’t loaded the AM Gunner yet, but Ring tells them to leave it. Ryoto is hesitant, but Ring tells him that because of the situation, they need to get the new units to the Hiryu Kai as soon as possible. Yuan tells Rio to escape and asks Ryoto to look after her. Rio objects, but Ring assures her that the enemy’s message indicates they aren’t there to destroy anything. Rio relents.

The Tausendfuessler launches, followed by Rio in the AM Gunner. Rio attacks the Rest Djemilas, but some still get near the shuttle. Before they can attack, they are destroyed by Lune Zoldark and her Valsione. Ring apologizes for dragging Lune into this, but Lune says she owes them for giving her Valsione a full tune up. She proceeds to break through the Rest Djemilas until the Graterkin goes after her. The Graterkin attacks Valsione, knocking it down before heading towards the Tausendfuessler. Ryoto realizes they can’t win with just two units and leaves the transport’s cockpit. Graterkin slices off one of the Tausendfuessler’s wings, causing it to crash. Graterkin jumps onto it, only to be flung off when the hatch opens. Ryoto launches in the Exbein Boxer. Rest Djemilas charge at him, but Ryoto destroys them with the Geist Knuckle and Catapult Kick attacks. Ring is surprised that he could boot up the Boxer so quickly, and Marion Radom and Kirk Hamil appear via hologram. They explained they thought something like that might happen, so they used the T-Link system to compensate. Lune decides to use the Psycho Blaster, but Graterkin shoots her down again. Rio fires missiles at it, but it counters with its photon laser, which blows the Valsione away. The Graterkin prepares to finish Lune off, but Ryoto tells Rio they’ll dock and use the Full Impact Cannon. They do so, and the Full Impact Cannon overpowers the photon laser. Graterkin blocks with its shield and survives the attack. It retreats, and the Hiryu Kai forces arrive and take on the remaining Rest Djemilas. Tasuku grabs the Tausendfuessler, Ryoto carries the Valsione and they all withdraw. Mekibos, Graterkin’s pilot, watches them go, musing that the seeds they sowed have grown more than they expected. Nightie-clad Lefina Enfield orders the Hiryu Kai to leave, lamenting that they didn’t get there sooner. She says the Hiryu Kai will head for Earth, and Sean asks about the stuffed lion she’s holding. In the hangar, Marion comments about how aggressive Ryoto is, wondering if it’s because of a certain cheat system. Ryoto assures Rio that her father and Ring will be fine. Mekibos and his comrades Aguija, Sikalog and Vigagi report their accomplishments to their leader, Wendolo. Vigagi says he’ll begin taking over North America using Langley, and Wendolo reminds him to search for Shu Shirakawa and the Granzon. Wendolo says they’re going to take away toys from foolish children.

Commentary

Yet another enemy faction makes their appearance; this time it’s the extraterrestrial threat of the series. They certainly take the Earth Sphere by storm, quickly gaining control of space and North America. More characters return with the Hiryu Kai, as well as Radha, Ryoto, Rio and Lune. The latter four fight to escape from the Moon, but have a formidable foe in Mekibos to face. The real surprise of the episode was Ryoto launching in the Exbein. The lack of the Huckebein in the animes have long since baffled fans. Some suggest it’s because they look too much like Gundams, but the Wildschwein looks just as Gundam-y. Well, whatever the case may be, it’s apparently made ok by slapping Quattro shades on it and changing its name. Ryoto originally piloted the Huckebein Mark III, but the Exbein makes a fine substitute. Something that bothered me was the use of BGMs. Instead of recording new versions of character themes, The Inspector just uses tracks from the PS2 game. That’s fine, but I hate how they just cut off like they do. Mekibos only gets to kick some ass with Violent Battle playing for 30 seconds before it just ends. It’s a shame since I love that song. Well, Ryoto’s Ace Attacker gets used to great effect. Lefina in her nightie was also used to great effect.
