SRW OG: Divine Wars Stage 2: Awakening Power

Summary

When Meteor 3 was examined, it was found to be artificial and the technology found within was labeled Extra Over Technology, or EOT. The EOT Investigation institute was founded to study it. EOTI’s leader, Dr Bian Zoldark announced that Earth might face an alien invasion. The military heeded his warning and began developing humanoid machine weaponry. Personal Troopers were the result. People run away from the stadium while men in black suits follow Tenzan. The Bugs latch onto Ryusei’s Gespenst and Aya tells him to get clear. Ingram says he expected more but time is up. The bugs are shot off and Ryusei turns to see Kai Kitamura along with two other Gespensts arrive. Kai wonders what the Type TT is doing there and who the pilot is. More bugs show up and Kai’s team takes them down. Kai hails Ryusei and demands he identify himself, holding him at gunpoint. Ingram contacts Kai and tells him it’s top secret. They detect more bugs and Kai tells Ingram not to get in the way of his mission. Kai leaves and Aya tells Ryusei to fall back. Ryusei objects and a bug attacks him. He repeatedly punches it, but the Gespenst’s arm malfunctions before he can finish it off. The bug charges a ring laser and Ryusei looks for more weapons. Before the bug fires, the T-Link Ripper activates and cuts it in half. All the bugs are reported destroyed and Aya is shocked. Ingram says that was a lot to accomplish in his first battle. He says he’ll go secure the Type TT and Ryusei. Kusuha is loaded onto an ambulance and apologizes to Ryusei, saying she’s the one who’s studying to be a nurse. Ryusei tries to go with her, but Ingram holds him back. Ingram introduces himself and tells Ryusei he’s going with them.

At the Izu base, one of three built to combat aliens, Kai gives a report to Commander Laker Randolf. Laker comments on how it’s the first time the bugs have attacked a city. He wonders how much longer they have to keep hiding it from the public and Hans Weber suggests until they begin a full-scale invasion. Ryusei asks how much longer they’ll keep him for and Ingram says it depends on his answer. He goes on to say that it’s illegal for civilians to operate Personal Troopers and there’s only one way for him to avoid imprisonment: join the military. He explains that the bugs are alien machines from a race called the Aerogators. He says as it stands, humanity has no chance against them but his project is developing new machines to fight them. Ingram adds that Ryusei’s friends and family will be in danger when the Aerogators invade. Ryusei thinks of his mother and Kusuha and agrees, but on a condition. Ingram informs Aya that Ryusei agreed under the condition that his mother’s hospital bills be paid by the military. He tells her he’ll be under her command and given test pilot training. Ryusei visits his mother and tells her he won’t be able to visit for a while. Yukiko says it’ll be lonely, but if he has something only he can do, he should do his best. Ryusei returns to the base and is met by Aya, who introduces herself. Ryusei recognizes her voice as the one talking to him in the Gespenst. She tells him to call her Aya and asks if she can call him Ryu. They shake hands and Aya senses something. She waves it off and shows him around the base. Ingram meets with Dr Kenzo Kobayashi and talks about Ryusei’s powers. Ingram says he’s surprised he was able to use the T-Link Ripper and pulls up data on Yukiko. Kenzo says like parent, like child and wonders if he’ll need adjustments. Ingram says they’ll observe him but doesn’t think it’ll be necessary, unlike Aya. Kenzo says he’s found another suitable candidate and gives Ingram a disc, which contains data on Kusuha. Kenzo asks about the other samples and Ingram pulls up data, which includes Tenzan, saying several people went missing. He says there’s probably a mole and Kenzo wonders if it’s the EOTI. At Aidoneus Island, where Meteor 3 crashed, Bian is told the government has accepted an invitation and to keep “G” on schedule. He enters a hangar and is met by Dr Shu Shirakawa. Bian asks how “G” is and Shu shows him. Bian says the Granzon will raise the curtain on a new era and the battle for humanity’s right to exist.

Commentary

With some help and some luck, Ryusei manages to hold off the bugs. He’s more or less forced to join the military afterwards, but he wasn’t exactly unwilling either. This episode introduces us to the T-Link System, which functions in the same fashion as Gundam‘s psycommu system. Ryusei is also revealed to have psychic abilities, which he apparently inherited from his mother. While having similar abilities to Newtypes, the psychics here don’t have evolution issues to worry about. Kenzo also mentions ‘adjustments,’ which is similar to Cyber Newtypes. Ingram hints that Aya is one of them, but she at least seems emotionally stable. We meet Bian and Shu, who will be major players in the coming conflict. We also get a peek at one of (if not the most) powerful mechs in existence, the Granzon. With it, Bian is planning something big.
