Gundam 0083 Ep. 7: With Shining Blue Fire

0
Summary

Kou successfully completes a test of the GP01Fb. When he returns to Anaheim’s hangar, Nina starts hitting on him again, but he just doesn’t get it. She tells him he can push the GP01Fb harder, but he says if he tried that he wouldn’t survive. Kou changes out of his normal suit and meets Keith. Keith encourages him to get his act together and just ask Nina out. He gives Kou two tickets for a movie called Shining Blue Fire so that he can take Nina. Keith then leaves for a date with Maura. Kou is very surprised by this, and Keith tells him that things change. In another part of Von Braun, Kelly argues with Latteura about going out and fighting. Elsewhere, Cima meets with O’Sullivan at Anaheim and asks that he give the Zeon better mobile suits. He agrees to give her a new suit, and she also asks him not to support the Albion so much. Nina continues to work with the GP01Fb data and is told by her boss that the administrative types don’t want her to be in the mobile suit development team any longer. They also don’t want her on the Albion because it will be going into battle. In the junkyard, Kelly shows the Val-Walo to Cima’s man Kult. He gives Kelly gold payment, which Kelly plans to give to Latteura. Kelly is shocked when Kult tells him he will not be piloting the Val-Walo because they wouldn’t trust a one-armed cripple. Nina looks at Kou’s profile on her computer and wishes he would help her. Kelly gets drunk and looks at a video message Gato sent him earlier asking for his help in Operation Stardust. Sinapus announces that the Albion will be heading to the Solomon Sea to search for the Delaz Fleet. Elsewhere, Cima’s camouflaged Cargo Ship leaves port.

Nina sits alone in her office, and Kou comes to visit her. She sees the movie tickets in his pocket and playfully asks what he wants. He fumbles and instead blurts out something about mobile suits. She calls him a coward and runs away. Later, she speaks to her father on the vidphone and agrees to come home to New Antwerp. Kelly tells Latteura that if he destroys the GP01Fb, the Delaz fleet will have to accept him. He takes the Val-Walo out of Von Braun as Cima’s ship passes by. She leaves Kult behind in a Zaku to fight the Val-Walo, and the Zaku is destroyed. Kou tries to speak to one of Nina’s friends when the battle alert sounds. The Albion leaves port, and Kelly demands to fight the GP01Fb, or he will begin firing on Von Braun. Sinapus orders first officer Paserov to have the ship fly away from Von Braun so that it doesn’t look like they’re using the city as a shield. Kou launches in the GP01Fb and pleads with Kelly not to throw his life away and fight. Nina hears Kelly’s message and goes out to speak with him. Kou has trouble fighting, and Kelly drops three plasma leaders around the GP01Fb that begin electrocuting it. Keith launches in his GM Cannon II to help Kou, and Nina begs Kelly to stop. Kelly accidentally fires at Nina and destroys her jeep. Keith destroys one of the energy pods and frees Kou. Kou watches Nina’s limp form and gets angry. He attacks Kelly, but his beam rifle does no damage. Kelly grabs Kou with one of his claws and begins crushing the GP01Fb. Kou ejects the top half of the GP01Fb and slams his beam saber into the Val-Walo. He tells Kelly to escape, but Kelly says he installed no escape system and has no regrets. The Val-Walo crashes on the Moon’s surface and explodes. Kou lands near Nina and finally confesses his feelings for her. He tells her that he wants to be with her. Soon after, the Albion leaves the Moon. At the Garden of Thorns, as Gato’s fleet departs, he regrets that Kelly was too late to join them. He says that he will always wait for Kelly because he knows him better than anyone else.

Commentary

This was a good episode. The romantic tension between Nina and Kou is finally resolved, but only after Kou screws up yet again with her. He must have absolutely no experience at all with women. What really surprised me was seeing Keith and Maura hook up. Talk about one weird combination. There are plenty of tragic fights between Gundam pilots in all series, and this one is no exception. There are some unanswered questions at the end of the episode. Nina tried to convince Kelly not to fight, so the two of them obviously knew each other. The question is, how did they know each other? Is Nina a Zeon? I guess we’ll have to wait and find out.
