Gundam Build Divers Re:RISE Ep. 10: The Ones Who Breathe There

0
Summary

Mobile Doll May rushes in to attack the Gundam Seltsam at close range and is quickly put on the defensive. May tosses explosives and gets in close, maneuvering behind the Gundam Seltsam and putting a beam saber to its head. She asks the masked pilot if he’s Masaki Shido, and he tries to attack her with his claw arm. He then blasts the ice around him to create a smokescreen to escape. The Resistance forces arrive at the Silver Tower and enter it. Kazami asks what an EL-Diver is again, and Parviz explains that they’re electronic lifeforms born from the infinitely expanding data of GBN. He explains that the first EL-Diver was Sarah, but since the 2nd Coalition of Volunteers battle, 87 more EL-Divers have appeared on GBN’s servers. Kazami remembers that the original Build Divers saved Sarah and asks May if she’s not human. She explains that she’s aware of her own existence and has activities she engages in, and she’s logged in to GBN from the real world like them. Hiroto asks why she protected him, and May answers because she thought she could win with her mobile doll form’s mobility in close combat. Kazami is surprised that she didn’t damage out after being hit so hard, and Parviz notes that none of them have so far. Parviz wonders if their last mission is next, and Kazami confidently declares that the climax will be in space. May reminds them about the Space Crossing festival, and Kazami complains about not being able to play battle after battle. Parviz thinks of it as an intermission, and Kazami wonders why there would be a festival right before the end of the story. May chimes in and asks what a festival is. Hiroto goes home and thinks about his participation in the 2nd Coalition of Volunteers battle. Hinata enters his room and notices a bump on his forehead. She asks what Eve is up to and comments that Hiroto seems lonely whenever he looks at his framed picture of her. Hinata asks if she’s gone, and Hiroto answers that she is. Hinata quickly leaves, and Hiroto places the photo of Eve face down. In GBN, Kazami uses his new Justi’gguy to help clear the rubble blocking access to the village. Jed and Tonoi notice that the suit looks different, and Freddie explains that the Justi’gguy is a new unit that Kazami built for the festival. May asks if road construction is part of preparing for a festival, and Kazami answers that this was unexpected. They wonder why the area has remained like this since their second mission, and May notes that she found Hiroto’s shield next to Jiric’s house, which typically in a mission would reset and disappear. Kazami wonders if it’s an infinite item bug, and Parviz wonders if things don’t reset because it’s a Story mission. The Build Divers decorate their mobile suits for the festival.

At night, Kazami shoots fireworks from the Justi’gguy’s hand and from a Muramasa blaster to mark the start of the festival. The villagers eat, drink and ride on swings and slides set up on the mobile suits. May finds Hiroto and comments that she wishes she could change the situation that makes a boy like Stola want to fight. Hiroto comments that they’re both really into this Story mission, and he touches the bump on his forehead. Freddie calls them over, and the Build Divers gather around a fire. Tonoi thanks the Build Divers for helping them fight the One-Eyes. Jiric comments that he didn’t think too much of the Build Divers at first, and he apologizes for that. The villagers then present carvings of each mobile suit to the Build Divers as gifts. Maiya tells Kazami that the village children made them, and he tells the children they’ll all be great builders someday. Hiroto walks off on his own and overhears Stola complaining to Freddie about wanting to fight. Stole tries to prove he’s an adult by drinking n’ga juice, but he coughs it up due to its bitter taste. Freddie returns to the festival with a box and asks Kazami where Hiroto is. From the top of a hill, Hiroto looks down at the lights from the village. Maiya explains to the rest of the Build Divers that the Space Crossing festival culminates with them using lanterns as an offering to the sacred beast, ancestral spirits and precious souls to thank them for watching over the people. The villagers walk in a group to a lake and place the lanterns on the water. Stola asks Jed to let him join the Resistance, but Jed refuses once again. Stola insists and says that he can’t stand by doing nothing. Jed tells Stola that they need people to protect the village, and he wants Stola to do that. Stola asks if the next mission will be that dangerous, and Jed answers that all missions are dangerous. Kazami starts to complain about event dialogue, but May tells him to shut up. After the lanterns drift away, they puff up like balloons and float into the sky. Hiroto rejoins the group, and Kazami comments that the lanterns are nice. Jed tells the Build Divers that he never expected they’d reach this day, and without them, the village would’ve been wiped out by the One-Eyes. He also says that there are many amazing places in their world that he wants the Build Divers to see. After everyone leaves, Hiroto asks May if an EL-Diver disappearing means that they’re dead, but she doesn’t know. May asks him if what he’s searching for is an EL-Diver.

Commentary

The surprise revelation that May is an EL-Diver is followed by some exposition that 87 such beings have appeared on GBN after Sarah. A flashback shows May being brought into the real world to meet Sarah, with cameos by Koichi and Nanami Nanase and Tsukasa Shiba. This revelation causes Hiroto to ask if Eve’s disappearance means she’s dead, so her fate is an unresolved question. Another unresolved question is the appearance of a masked man as the Gundam Seltsam pilot, and May bringing up the name Masaki Shido. The rest of the team doesn’t know what she’s up to, so this must be part of her investigation for Magee. The Space Crossing festival featured here seems quite reminiscent of a Japanese Obon festival, and the preparations leading up to it show the Build Divers that there are quite a few oddities about how the Story mission is progressing. Too many instances of the game not operating as it should keep popping up, including Hiroto actually having a bruise on his forehead in the real world that corresponds to an injury he received in the game. We know from the previous series that Divers can’t be injured in GBN, so something is definitely going on here.
