Gundam Wing Ep. 41: Crossfire at Barge

0
Summary

Barge deploys its Taurus suits to hold back the approaching White Fang forces. The Tauruses are armed with laser cannons to fight the Virgo IIs, although they can’t handle the output for long. The White Fang attack force enters firing range and deploys its new Virgo IIs, which have an easy time destroying the Tauruses. Sedici is surprised to see the Gundam Epyon fly by and tells Zechs that as commander, he should give orders and leave the fighting to the mobile dolls. Zechs keeps flying toward the battle zone, and Sedici says that Zechs must still think of himself as the Lightning Count. On the Peacemillion, Quatre tries to talk Noin out of leaving, but she tells him that she has to speak to Zechs and find out what he’s up to. She’s sure he must have a good reason, and that he’s rebelling because of Relena and the Sanc Kingdom. Quatre tells her it’s too dangerous to go to Barge alone, so he’ll go with her now that the Gundam Sandrock Custom space combat ready. Duo says it should be easy to approach Barge with so many colonies in the area, and she says he wants OZ and White Fang to know that the God of Death is back. Trowa decides to come with them as well to provide cover. On Earth, Heero attacks an OZ base so he can steal a shuttle and head back to space. He then receives an incoming signal from Sally’s transport plane. Sally tells Heero she has something important to give him, and she wants to make sure he gets it because it was so hard to find. After the plane lands, the cargo is unloaded and Sally asks Heero to take the Gundam Heavyarms into space with him. Sally tells Heero that she thinks the Gundams are essential now, so she wants to do everything she can to help the pilots. Heero picks up more incoming enemy suits and tells Sally to prep the shuttle for launch. Sally says to herself that Heero seems different this time and less abrasive. At a Romefeller executive meeting, Weridge laments the fact that the two descendants of the Peacecrafts are fighting on opposite sides now. Weridge regrets that the quest for peace has led the Peacecraft children to a cruel destiny, and at that moment Treize enters the room with armed soldiers and states that if they feel that way, they should listen to him. Relena wonders what Zechs is doing now that the world is finally moving toward peace. She hears noises and begins walking through the empty palace until she finally finds Treize in a dark room. She asks him what he’s doing, and he informs her that Romefeller’s top executives have dismissed her from her position. She accepts and wants to convince Zechs to not fight, but Treize tells her she isn’t capable of that. As the new representative of the World Nation, he intends to lead the battle to its conclusion. After Relena leaves, Dorothy decides that she’ll have to go to space too.

OZ and White Fang continue to fight outside of Barge. The station fires its cannons and destroys several Virgo IIs. Zechs attacks several Tauruses with his heat rod and destroys them. Barge’s commander wants to fire the main cannon again, even though it’s only at 80 percent charge. Quatre, Noin, Trowa and Duo approach the battlefield in their mobile suits. Noin isn’t sure where Zechs might be, and Trowa decides to hang back and defend the nearby colonies. Several Tauruses approach and open fire, but they’re quickly destroyed by Zechs before Duo and Quatre can act. Barge fires its main cannon, which destroys many Virgo IIs, Sedici’s ship and damages a colony. The Gundam pilots are shocked, and Duo comments that a direct hit could’ve destroyed the colony. Zechs suddenly attacks Duo, who is forced onto the defensive. Zechs comments that they’ve finally made it, and Duo moves to attack, but he’s easily pushed back. Duo is surprised by the Gundam Epyon’s speed and says that it’s as strong as Wing Zero. Quatre then attacks with his heat shotels, but Zechs blocks every attack. The Barge commander sees the Gundams fighting each other and decides to take the opportunity to destroy them all with the main cannon. Quatre is knocked back and notices that Barge is about to fire again, and Duo attacks Zechs. Noin grabs Zechs from behind and tells Duo and Quatre to take care of Barge before it fires again. Noin tells Zechs that Earth is moving toward peace under Relena, so he asks why he’s become Relena’s enemy. Zechs answers that it’s as he stated before, and that Earth is the source of all conflict. Zechs breaks free and points his beam sword at Noin, saying he’ll set everything right. Noin chases after Zechs and comes under attack from several Tauruses, but Trowa arrives to provide backup. Duo and Quatre destroy the Tauruses blocking their path, and Quatre comments that they won’t make it in time. Zechs speeds past them and sets his beam sword to maximum output, which he uses to slice Barge in half. Quatre and the others watch in shock as the fortress explodes.

Commentary

Now that Zechs has taken control of White Fang, it’s clear that he’s not content to sit on his laurels. He personally jumps into the battle at Barge, and aside from schooling the Gundam boys, extends his beam sword to massive length and destroys the fortress. Of course, he only does this AFTER the cannon has already fired, destroying many of his own mobile dolls and killing men like Sedici. Interestingly, there’s a female soldier at OZ who bears more than a passing resemblance to Sayla Mass from the original series, so she could certainly be a nod to Sayla. On Earth, Treize finally steps forward after a long period of inaction to seize control of Romefeller. Now, instead of a brother and sister fighting, we have two old friends on opposing sides. Heero only has a bit of time in this episode, but he’s heading up to space to join everyone else. It’s also good to see Sally make a brief return after a long absence.
