Macross Delta Mission 8: Escape Resonance

0
Summary

Bogue jumps over the flight of stairs and immediately disarms Hayate and Mirage before pointing his sword at Freyja. Hayate warns Bogue to not do anything to her, but Bogue dismisses her as a failure who can’t even control her rune. Hayate sees that Mirage has a flashbang ready, so he taunts Bogue by saying that pointing a sword at an unarmed girl isn’t chivalry. Bogue smacks Hayate just as Mirage tosses the flashbang, but the Jussila twins jump down and join the fight, taking down both Hayate and Mirage. Elsewhere, Messer and the others are cornered by infected Voldorian soldiers. He lays down covering fire to allow everyone to move, but he takes a bullet in the arm. In space, Arad is informed that they’ve lost contact with the infiltration team. Hermann asks Bogue if he’s going to kill the prisoners before interrogating them, and Bogue answers that they deserve to be executed now. Freyja tells Bogue to take out his problems on her and not the others. Bogue states that they’re at war and fighting to liberate the planets of the Brisingr Cluster, but Hayate asks how they’re liberating anyone by using mind control and tearing families apart. Bogue answers that everything is the fault of Earthlings, and Freyja is saddened that they’re using the apples people worked hard to grow as tools of war. Kassim reveals that his family had an orchard, but they were all lost in the war. Keith arrives and asks Freyja why she abandoned her fatherland to sing with tainted people. Messer has flashbacks to an earlier battle, and Mikumo rejoins the group to start the Walkure show. Freyja declares that she didn’t abandon Windermere, and Keith asks why she sings alongside those she should despise. She recalls Mikumo’s questions about why she’s singing and what feelings she’s putting into it. Keith says her singing with no resolve is unnecessary on the battlefield, so he’s going to cut her down. Hayate is knocked aside while trying to stop him, but at the last minute Roid jumps down and blocks Keith’s sword with his own. Roid states that he gave orders for them to be captured and not killed. Just then, multidrones enter the chamber and project holograms of the Walkure members singing “Forbidden Borderline.” Messer fires from above at Hermann, but he jumps away in time. Their singing causes a build up of fold waves in the ruins. Arad and Chuck take off and head for the surface. Keith and Messer clash and recognize each other as the White Knight and Grim Reaper. Keith vows to finish Messer off in the sky before escaping. Hayate and the others reach the surface and find that Arad and Chuck have delivered their planes. Delta Flight takes off and heads for the skies.

On Windermere, Heinz starts singing and is heard by Delta Flight and Walkure on Voldor. Freyja recognizes him as the Singer of the Wind and says his song has no color. Arad tells everyone they should pull back now that they have their intel. NUNS Nightmare Pluses attack, and Hayate shoots one in the wing to disable it. Messer’s Siegfried flies by and destroys a Nightmare Plus before engaging Keith’s Draken III. As Messer dodges Keith’s attack, he falls victim to Var infection. Keith notices that Messer’s movements are slow and wonders if he’s infected. Missiles fly toward Walkure and are intercepted by multi-drones. Freyja sees Hayate’s Siegfried fighting a Nightmare Plus and recognizes the emblem on it as Alberto’s. She tells Hayate who he’s fighting, and Hayate is knocked down by a volley of missiles. Hayate fires back and damages Alberto’s leg, causing him to fall in a mud pit, but he keeps advancing. Freyja runs over and pleads with Alberto not to shoot. Her rune activates as she starts singing a song to Alberto. He fires his gun pod at her, but Hayate protects her while she sings. The rest of Walkure feel Freyja’s song, as does Heinz. Messer’s Var infection retreats, followed by Alberto, who thinks of his two children. Bogue’s Draken III flies in to attack, but Hayate takes off and trades fire with him. Hayate resonates with Freyja’s song, which allows him to fly faster as he chases Bogue. Bogue tries to fall behind Hayate and shoot at him in GERWALK mode, but Hayate already has his weapons ready and opens fire. Bogue wonders if Hayate is riding the wind, and Hayate shoots at Bogue’s legs instead of the cockpit, causing him to crash. Delta Flight and the Walkure shuttle escape, and Roid wonders if the ruins are coming back to life. On the Aether, Mikumo again asks Freyja what she’s doing here. Freyja answers that she wants to sing and make everyone happy so that there won’t be any reason to have wars. Hayate and Mirage find Messer in a darkened room and see that he’s been infected with Var.

Commentary

Enemies come face-to-face as the Aerial Knights tangle with Delta Flight on the ground and in the air. You can see the elitist contempt that Bogue has for Earthlings, and he’s ready to kill them all rather than do something sensible like interrogate them. After his clashes with Hayate, you can definitely see their rivalry forming, and he’s got shades of future loser villain written all over him. He and Keith spout a lot of nonsense about their intentions, and Hayate is correct in pointing out that mind control is not a match with liberating people. The major outcome of this episode is that Freyja has finally found her reason to sing and earned her place in Walkure. She was pretty fearless in singing to stop Alberto, and she didn’t even blink when he almost killed her. Of course, she’s going to have an extra large target on her back now since the Aerial Knights view her as a traitor. The other big event here is Messer being infected with Var, which gets healed by Walkure, only to return again later. This is the first time we’ve seen this, and I’m wondering how either his bullet wound or the traumatic flashback of killing people factors in.
