By UC 0078, the Principality of Zeon was already producing the MS-06C Zaku II, but it also launched an upgrade program for the aging MS-05B Zaku I that resulted in a new model, the MS-05Q. Many pilots preferred their existing units, which were upgraded with new reactors and other features. The original plan was to convert 240 units to the MS-05Q revision, but only 162 were converted due to priority being assigned to the construction of new machines. Near the end of the One Year War, a second run of fewer than 30 units were upgraded to MS-05Q. One MS-05Q unit was used by pilot Norris Packard and featured custom knuckle spikes for close combat. In February UC 0079, Packard conducted the first of a series of missions to attack Earth Federation Forces fuel transport fleets.
